It has been a week since the Jasper incident. I am warming up to Finn and Clarke but I am still a quiet person. Bellamy keeps trying to start small conversations but I never respond and move on. I try to keep myself distracted. For the first time in almost eight years, I am free to do whatever I want. This means that nobody can stop me from taking walks in the woods. Every day around midday, I sneak out past the wall and walk around the forest. Finn had brought me some paper and pencils so I was making a map for myself. It helped me not get lost like last time. I collect plants and try to identify them and their uses. Today though, it is raining so I am in the lower level of the dropship, wanting to leave but can't. Some people are playing out in the rain but quite a few are inside. Bellamy comes running into the dropship, soaking wet. Instead of going all the way in, he takes a seat next to me. We don't say anything for a while, just sitting in silence. Finally, Bellamy speaks.
"I hope you aren't afraid of me," he says. I turn and see that he is looking at me. He does look quite cute with his hair curling with the water and some dripping down his face.
"I'm not afraid of you," I say back. I can tell he relaxes a bit now that I have responded to him.
"My name is Bellamy. It is nice to meet you," he says. He holds out his hand in a formal manner. I hesitate but then grab his hand and we shake. I feel a smile creep onto my face from this action.
"I'm Ash," I say. He is smiling as well. For the next few minutes, we sit there sharing small tidbits of information about each other until Finn comes looking for me.
"Hey, Ash..." Both Bellamy and I turn around and look at him. He trailed off when he saw Bellamy.
"I'll catch you later," Bellamy says. His hand briefly touches my arm before he leaves. He proceeds to go back out into the rain and to his tent, leaving me with Finn.
"What's up?" I ask Finn.
"What were you doing with him?" Finn asks. He looks kinda shocked.
"We were just getting to know each other a little bit better," I say.
"Well, Clarke is looking for you. I don't know why. She's up on the third floor," he says.
"Thanks." I walk past him but he grabs my arm.
"Don't trust him. He is nothing but trouble."
"Like everyone else? We are all criminals down here Finn. And I can choose who I talk to. Just like I chose you," I say. He lets me go and I go and find Clarke.
A few days later, the rain is gone and everyone is working on the wall again. I am getting ready to leave camp when there is a lot of commotion.
"Hey! You think the Grounders are just gonna sit around, and wait for us to finish the wall? Maybe we should let the little girl do the lifting for you, huh?" Murphy yells at Connor. You look to the young girl Murphy is referring to and see that Bellamy is talking to her. She seems way too young to have been arrested but you were even younger when you got arrested. Just past them, you notice Jasper and Octavia walking towards the wall. You decide to go after them, see if you can get out the front. Once close enough, you can hear them talking.
"Jasper, it's been a week, okay? You've been given a second chance. You gotta use it," Octavia says. Before I could get over there, someone grabs her and pulls her out of Jasper's view. He starts to panic.
"Octavia? Octavia? Octavia! Octavia, are you okay?" Octavia comes back into view, pushing someone away.
"Hey, jerk! Get the hell out of here." She turns right as Jasper turns to return to the dropship.
"Jasper, come on. There's nothing to be afraid of," she tries to reason. He pushes past me, almost knocking me down but someone catches my arm before I fall. I look over and it is Finn.
"You okay?" I nod and pull my arm out of his grip. I continue walking forward but right as I get outside the wall, someone grabs my arm again.
"Woah, where do you think you are going?" I turn and it is Bellamy.
"Out." I try to pull my arm away but he tightens his grip.
"Nobody leaves camp. Not alone and not without protection," he says. We are drawing a lot of attention. His grip is hard enough to cause bruises. I try to pull away again but he refuses to let go. I don't look up at Bellamy, trying to push down tears.
"Bellamy, let go of her arm," I hear Clarke say. I look up at Bellamy as he releases my arm. I feel a tear run down my cheek and see panic fill his eyes.
"Ash, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you," he whispers. I carefully hold my arm with my other hand and just stand there, slightly shaking. Everyone around is staring at us. I glance around and make eye contact with Finn. I proceed to turn and walk out into the woods, following a path that I didn't know.
About an hour passes before I decide to try to return to camp. I had not mapped anything or picked up any plants. I was too involved in my head to even think about that stuff. I start picking my way back, not wanting to be out too late.
After wandering for maybe another hour, I can hear yelling and chanting coming from camp so I make my way back over.
"Bellamy! Bellamy! Bellamy!" Everyone seems to be chanting. Even though I am mad at him, this makes me panic and start to run. But, once I get back to camp, my blood runs cold. There is a rope around Murphy's neck and he is barely standing on a box. Bellamy stands by, ready to kick the box out from under his feet.
"No!" I scream as he kicks the box. I push my way forward but someone grabs me and holds me back. I try to fight but then everything goes black as a fist connects with my face.
