The phone had rung at around eleven in the morning. A hand reached out, clutched the phone, and lifted it from the dial, but it almost fell to the floor because she was still in bed. She tried to answer as fast as she could so the ringing would stop, but she was slow in the mornings. "Mmm hello?"
Diana didn't fight the sleepiness that was returning to her. Her eyelids started to close again and the telephone in her hand was starting to slip. "Hey Diana."
"Oh heyyy," she replied without realizing who was on the other side of the line. The voice would've been familiar if she was fully awake.
"Did you just wake up?"
It was him.
"No," Diana's eyes shot open, "Steve, I've been up!"
"Sure," Steve paused, "we need to talk. You might wanna get up for this."
Her stomach felt like it had dropped. Diana heard the way the tone of his voice changed. Steve usually called to check up on her, give humor, or just talk. Diana didn't like having serious talks with Steve, it wasn't in their nature. It was rare when they had to talk seriously, and it made Diana feel like a little kid.
Diana sat up. She clutched the telephone tighter now. Had something happened to her brother? To Steve? Her mom? It hadn't been long ago when she told him a condition of her departure to California.
"Steve I have one last thing I need you to do for me."
Steve closed the distance between them when he realized the tone of Diana's voice changed. "What is it?"
"If anything happens in Hawkins again, anything at all," she repeated, "you call me. Do not hesitate. We're all a team."
"Tell me it's not back," she said through the line.
Silence. Steve didn't answer back for at least half a minute. "Answer me, Steve."
"Shit, well it's something like that."
Diana took in a deep breath. She heard him begin to explain the events of the last 24 hours in Hawkins. A lot of his words were beginning to blend together as her mind began to race faster than she could comprehend. She couldn't concentrate on Steve's story anymore.
The door to her room shut suddenly. Diana jumped up. What she did understand from Steve's story had already given her a spook, and she was all the way across the country. She looked up at the door and found him already staring at her.
Billy held two cups of coffee in his hands and sent her a smile as he sat of her desk chair. Diana's eyes followed him. She forgot to return the smile.
Billy set the coffee on the desk. He returned his attention to the telephone call Diana was on. His suspicions grew. Although she tried, Diana couldn't hide her emotions that well. Or at least he knew her all too well to tell. Billy grabbed her free hand and held it in his. She met his eyes. Diana shook her head as she held Billy's hand tightly. He knew something was wrong.
Their eyes couldn't tear away from the other's.
I can't lose you.
"Diana? You there?" Steve questioned.
