Three knocks came from the other side of Avery and Diana's door. Avery was too busy with showering in their bathroom so the other girl groaned out of bed, sparing her last few minutes of peace and quiet. Diana rubbed her sleepy eyes with the back of her hand before unlocking the door. It was probably just Billy or the dorm manager.

Diana did not get back to her dorm until two a.m. last night. Billy took her to a green hill and they both stargazed, time ticking and waiting for Diana's official birthday. When it reached midnight Diana buried her face in her hands as Billy shook her wildly, celebrating her nineteenth year of life by holding her close and kissing her passionately. Billy popped open a bottle of a nonalcoholic drink, even if he much preferred the real stuff, and they drank it till the liquid was gone. Diana loved him even more for putting in the effort of not buying alcohol, since she was over three months sober. When Billy dropped her off at her dorm he gave her multiple gifts and told her to open them in her dorm. Before he let her go he slipped a silver ring with an emerald diamond on it in the gift bag.

Diana's sleepiness and grogginess couldn't even let her focus on what happened next.

"Surprise!" A voice yells before attacking Diana with a tight hug, causing her and this person to almost fall back.

Except this wasn't no ordinary person. Diana had no time to register who was at the door but this person had extremely familiar hair pressed against her cheek. It was Steve. "Happy Birthday!"

Diana was no longer sleep deprived. He eyes widened in shock, both in a good and horrific way. Good because her best friend surprised her by flying over to Los Angeles for her birthday, and horrific because absolutely no one from Hawkins knows Billy's alive.

"Steve!" Diana exclaims to hide her nervousness as she hugs him back, "what are you doing here!"

"I refused to miss your nineteenth birthday silly! Plus this was the perfect opportunity to finally visit this city," Steve pulls away as he sets his bags on the tile, "we're going to have fun this weekend."

"Well I'm glad you're here," Diana smiles, "it's good to have you back."

Steve takes in her appearance. Diana looks back to normal, if not almost there. Her glow is back, her smile is warm, and she looks healthier. California really did help her, he thought.

Just then the bathroom door opens and out comes Avery in jeans and a sports bra with her hair in a bundle of a towel. Steve quickly turns around to give Avery privacy. "Woah! Who are you? Diana?" The girl questions.

"It's okay, he's my friend from Hawkins. But he's basically my brother." Diana shrugs her shoulders as Avery puts on a t-shirt.

"Well hi I'm Avery, Diana's roommate! You can turn around now." Steve turns around to introduce himself but Diana notices his smile grow wider and his eyes widen; Steve likes her.
