“Why did you become a doctor?”
The last question from the director of Verlis and the most common question that is usually being asked during a residential interview.
“Because I want to” I said bored as I shrugged my shoulders.
I saw how ate Alrisa coughed, oh correction, it’s Dr. Altamirano, as she tried to suppress her laugh. She is now a chief doctor in her department.
Yung mga kasabayan ko na doctors na tinanong na din ng ganyan including Orion ay kitang kita na sa mga mukha nila ang pag guhit ng ngiti habang yung iba ay nakanganga sa gulat. Lahat sila seryoso ang sagot like they want to give people the chance to live by curing their diseases, they want to help find a cure to rare diseases, and such. But, exclude me from the drama. I don’t want it.
“Ehem is that all Dr. Silva?” Ate Alrisa spoke as she gulped the water in her mouth because she reached the bottle of water in front of her to drink when she heard my answer to prevent coughing again.
“Honestly, my first dream job was to become accountant because I wanted to get reach. You know, accountants earn so much money. But, I realized it’s not for me. Doing journals, 16 columns, and counting assets and liabilities and everything is not my forte. So, I shifted to being a flight attendant. I used to dreamed of traveling the whole world for free while earning 5 times a month as my salary. But, again I realized it’s not for me because my dad wouldn’t approve that because he wanted me to become a lawyer and have something beside my name. Besides, I can still travel the world as a doctor while helping the less fortunate people by giving them free healthcare services” I told them and paused.
Kaya nung una din talaga gusto ko maging accountant because my father wanted me to become a CPA lawyer and after that, I’ll be a politician just like him.
I was always the puppet in our family. I’ve always obeyed my father’s orders and followed whatever he wanted me to do. Before, being a good and perfect daughter was also my dream because I wanted to be like Sapphire. Our dad is always so fond of her because she’s so perfect. She knows everything. I wanted to be like her to get dad’s attention that’s why I didn’t complain despite of being controlled my whole life.
My future has already been fixed until he planned to get me married to the man I barely knew and that’s when I got the courage to disobey him. I don’t want to get trapped to a man whom I barely knew and I don’t love for the rest of my life. Marriage is no joke and very sacred. You can’t decide about it overnight because it requires deep and rational thinking.
How ridiculous, I still ended up with a fuck up marriage with Paco.
“Hearings and trials are long, it takes years which I think is boring. So, here I am in front of all of you. A doctor, applying for a residency” I continued nonchalantly to finish my answer.
After that, the room was filled in with silence as if like they were absorbing what I have just told them. They were all in awe until a confetti exploded from above the room which startled them, yes just them because I don’t get startled easily. A congratulatory banner fell and was hanged on the huge glass window which caused to cover the beautiful view of the city in front of us.
“Congrats and welcome to Verlis, Dr. Silver Nahla Silva” I slowly read the banner in a low tone of voice.
“I am so proud of you, anak” I heard my mom’s voice which made me look for her but she is nowhere to be found. It was just from the speaker installed in the room.
My co-applicants and the other chief doctors were shocked when they heard what my mother said. Ang hindi lang nagulat ay si Dr. Altamirano at Orion. It seems like they were already expecting this.
