"His name was Kakyoin. Noriaki Kakyoin," Jotaro said. I could hear something in his voice. It sounded pained. "He was the greatest friend I'd ever had."
Was... Had...
Jotaro had lost this person.
Kakyoin had a wide, bright smile that seemed so genuine and happy. The cherry earrings he wore matched his hair perfectly.
He began to walk. His mouth moving, but no words reached my ears.
"What is he saying?" I asked.
"He's telling me how he'd like to see his family again," Jotaro answered. "How... Once my mother's smile is safe, he'll return to his family and live with them for a little while longer."
My lips pressed together. "Did he... get to see them again."
I was afraid of the answer. I didn't know Noriaki Kakyoin... but I wanted him to live. Just seeing him smile and talk about his future... I wanted him to have it.
Suddenly, I saw a sky full of green lines. They were falling slowly, desolving into an outstretched hand. Jotaro's hand.
They were like emeralds, so beautiful. My eyes moved to a water tower that was leaking water onto the town below. There was Kakyoin, bloody and motionless.
A hole where his beautiful heart used to be.
"No..." I gasped, a tear escaping my flooded eye. "He-"
"Y/n," Jotaro quietly said. As his hands left mine, I saw glimpses of others. A small black and white dog and an Egyptian man. Both were smiling down on Jotaro from the clouds above. Both were gone.
"Y/n," He said again. I opened my eyes as the memories faded, my cheeks wet from the many tears I'd shed. "It doesn't matter if you're tired of it all. Evil can take things from you that you can't take back. It can do things to you that will hurt you until there's no coming back. So don't stop fighting. Don't let evil win."
His thumb gently wiped away what was left of my tears. "Shall we continue the discussion we began this morning?"
I nodded, a small, truthful smile on my face.
-
"Actually," He began. "I'm curious. Earlier, you said I was your motivation for continuing. What did you mean by that?"
We sat on a comfortable couch in his living room, sipping warm tea as we conversed. We'd already discussed our arrangements for after the wedding. I would live here with him, stop coming to work until our child was born, and my life would be quite comfortable. Although it wasn't the most ordinary life, it seemed like a pleasant one.
"You remembered that, huh?" I laughed nervously. I'd forgotten I'd told him that. "Well, if you must know, it was your interest in marine creatures. I found it quite encouraging. You were so passionate and didn't let anyone get in your way to be the best. I thought you were the most confident person, and look where it's brought you." I smiled at the thought. "You may not realize it, but you really are the reason for my being here today. Without the danger, this life is a happy one. So, thank you."
