Jotaro hugged me close that night, his arms securely wrapped around me as he nuzzled his face into the nape of my neck. Although he didn't say anything, I was sure I was emitting a relaxing scent for him, just as he was for me.
However, as comfortable as I was, I didn't think I'd be able to get any sleep that night. Jotaro loved me. I loved Jotaro. Did that mean we would lead a happy life forever? Did that mean everything would be perfect from then on? To me, it did.
-
I suddenly awoke to the sound of my phone ringing, the familiar tune echoing throughout our bedroom as I opened my eyes in confusion. The room was still dark, and Jotaro's breath was still soothing against my skin. I quickly reached out and picked up my phone. The sound paused as I turned it on, and my tired eyes grew wide as I saw the caller I.D.
Mother.
Jotaro seemed to be sound asleep as I slipped away from him, scurrying out of the room before answering. I took a deep breath, slowly bringing the phone to my ear.
"Moshi moshi?" I quietly spoke into the phone, gripping it tightly as I awaited my mother's response.
"Y/n," She said, her voice deep and harsh. I gulped instinctively. I knew exactly why she was calling.
"Yes?"
"Have you been well?" She asked, her voice slow and hesitant. I blinked a few times, wondering if I'd heard her correctly. She wasn't going to ask me where I'd been? She wasn't angry with me for keeping my situation to myself? As I wondered these things, it suddenly hit me: Perhaps she didn't know.
"I've... been really well, actually," I answered honestly, a small smile appearing on my half-awake face. "And you?"
She sighed. "Don't ask as though you actually want to hear the answer," She grumbled. My smile disappeared immediately, and I looked down at my feet in disappointment.
"I apol-"
"I meant someone today," She interrupted. I looked back up into the dark hallway. "She was a very sweet lady, let me tell you!" Her voice seemed joyful, the static of the phone call masking the irritation hidden deep within. Of course, I could hear it clearly.
"Where did you meet this lady?" I asked, my heart beginning to pound. I was afraid I knew the answers to the questions I would be asking. Mother, quite unfortunately, had met Mrs. Kujo.
She chuckled slightly before inhaling sharply. "I met her at your office. She was delivering lunch for her son, who happens to work there as well," She explained.
If this conversation were being held with anyone but Mother, I would've giggled at the fact that Mrs. Kujo delivered Jotaro's lunch. I would've found it adorable. However, that wasn't the case at that moment.
"She told me she was quite worried for him and his wife-to-be," She sighed as though the worry was contagious. "I began to worry as well, of course, because my daughter, who is so dear to me, works there too."
"Don't be worried, Mother," I assured, smiling for fear that she could sense my distress. "These events haven't been too troublesome."
"Yes, well, you've always been strong, haven't you," She chuckled again.
"Thank you, Mother, for worrying about me."
"Well, this very kind lady asked me what department you work in. I felt so embarrassing, you see, because I didn't know."
"I apolo-"
"But, you know," She interrupted again. "Being the kind lady she is, she asked for your name, so she could assist me in visiting you. I insisted on contacting you myself, but she told me not to take the trouble. So, I gave her your name." She paused.
I wondered if she could hear my heartbeat. She probably could. Hell, Jotaro probably could. But what was I supposed to say?
"She walked me all the way to your department, but you weren't there!" She huffed. "Where could you possibly have been? This kind lady took all that time to find you, but you were gone! I should think the lunch she'd prepared cooled down by the time she finally reached her son!"
I nearly sighed but held in my relief in fear she'd hear me. I was truly blessed to have escaped. The kind lady must not have been Jotaro's mother, but some other perfect sou-
"Did you think I'd really say that?" She suddenly said.
My heart seemed to stop.
"What?"
"Is that what you thought happened?!" She yelled. I flinched from the sudden volume, holding the phone away from my ear as my heart once again pounded. "Are you at that man's house now?! Did you fuck until you passed out?!" She screamed.
Her words caused my tired eyes to sting with tears? "Mama, I-"
"You call me 'Mother'!" She demanded.
"Yes, Mother. I apologize," I squeaked, a tear slipping down my puffy, red cheek. "But I think you should listen to me."
"I don't give a shit what you think!" She grumbled, sighing long and hard in silence for a moment.
"Mother, I've really learned to love. It... It's not as you said. I-!"
"Y/n!" She screamed. I shut my quivering mouth. "A slut like you could never-!" Her voice began to fade away as the phone was suddenly taken from my hand.
Mother's voice disappeared, and Jotaro's hand patted my head. "Good grief," He sighed, turning me to face him. I looked up at his face in relief.
"I'm sorry to wake you," I mumbled, wondering if he'd heard any of the words Mother had said. Well, the words she'd screamed.
He shook his head slowly, his finger gently wiping away the single tear I'd shed. "Should we not invite her to our wedding?" He asked. I giggled.
"No, she should be there. I'm sure she'll change her mind."
Jotaro didn't seem thrilled by my words. He wasn't angry or disappointed, but a hint of worry glimmered in his ocean blue eyes. "We'll think more about it."
