Stevie blinked as Jay walked over and sat next to her on the rim of the fountain. As far as Stevie could tell, she and Jay were the only ones awake.
"Hey, uh...are you okay?" Stevie asked.
"Uh...no? Yes? Mayhaps?" Jay shrugged. "A lot's been going on."
Stevie blinked. "You can tell me anything, you know."
Jay sighed, slipping a paper over to Stevie. "Read this whenyou get the chance, okay? And, uh.." She blinked. "Red eyes. Very bad."
"What?" Stevie asked, confused.
Jay shook her head. "The gemstones...they're a being. It's...it's in my ad, it's in Kate's head...Kate is Kim, Stevie...Kim is the girl's name, Kate's the gem, I-" Jay winced and looked away.
Stevie froze, processing for a moment. "Jay...? Are you..uh...okay?"
Jay glanced over. "Huh? Oh, no, I'm fine."
Stevie cursed. Jay's eyes had gone the same blood-red as Kate's had. Stevie hopped to her feet and stumbled backwards.
"Well, I wasn't counting on this." Kate hummed.
"Let Jay go!" Stevie yelled.
"I'm sorry, but I think I can't do that." Kate said. "Now...well, I'll have to deal with you. You know my secret."
Stevie tued on her heels and ran into the cafeteria; it was big and she had space to run there. Kate was close in pursuit, she could tell. Stevie slipped under one of the tables and Kate, who hadn't been counting on the change of direction, crashed into the wall.
Stevie took Kate's momentary disorientation to hide above one of the lockers, in the tiny space. Fear shook her down to her core and tears poured down her cheeks. She cupped her mouth with her hands to stop any quiet whimpers from escaping.
She heard Kate's footsteps and closed her eyes, waiting.
A pause, and the footsteps started to fade. Stevie made the mistake of relaxing, letting out a soft whimper. The footsteps stopped.
I'm dead, Stevie thought, I'm dead, I'm dead...
Then the sound of what seemed like a rack of something metallic crashing came from the kitchen. Stevie opened her eyes and saw Kate walking away.
As softly and quietly as she could, Stevie made her escape into the main room, then, as softly as she could, she knocked on Goose and Aelia's door.
Aelia opened the door. "S-"
Stevie launched herself inside, shut and locked the door, then pressed her back to it and slid down, tears streaming down her cheeks. Her breaths came in short gasps and she took a moment to breathe.
"Uh.." Goose and Aelia glanced at each other.
"We have to talk." Stevie breathed.
