Stevie blinked as the walls slowly patterned into black space, and, at the center was Kate. She was a lot smaller and younger-looking than Stevie had thought.

Kate growled. "What do you want?"

"I want you to let my friends go." Stevie said. "I came here to negoatiate."

"Negotiate all you want." Kate snorted. "You're just wasting both of our time."

"Listen, Kate, I don't get what you're getting out of doing this to my friends." Stevie said, trying not to get angry. "Is it enjoyment? Are you doing this to make you happy? Because I'm sure there are other ways."

Stevie was vaguely aware that Kate was mocking her with her hand and was pretty sure that she wasn't listening.

Stevie clenched her fists. "Why do you do this? For power? For acceptance? Are you lonely? What the fuck do you want from us?"

Kate's gaze sharpened. "If you knew anything about me you'd know what power, acceptance, and company mean nothing to me." She hissed.

"Then what do you want?" Stevie yelled. "We're trying to help you, but w-"

"You can't!" Kate practically screamed. "Nobody can help me! It's better if you just stop trying!"

Stevie fell into a startled silence. Kate looked away, practically fuming.

"Why not?" Stevie asked.

Kate jumped. "What?"

"Why can't anyone help you?" Stevie stared at her. "Have you let anyone try?"

"Trust me, you can't." Kate huffed.

"Let us try." Stevie said.

"Why would you help me?" Kate narrowed her eyes.

"If it makes you feel any better, we care about our friends more than you." Jordie sniffed.

"That sounds like a real answer." Kate lifted her chin.

"Do you have friends?" Stevie asked.

Kate rose an eyebrow. "Had, but go on."

"How would you feel if your friends weren't...themselves...anymore?" Stevie asked.

"My empathy skills are to poor for these games." Kate grumbled.

Stevie sighed. "Kate, please?"

"You barely know her, why are you being so persistent about this?" Kate asked, exasperated.

"Because I care." Stevie said. "Because we care. I don't know if you've ever cared about someone, and frankly, it doesn't matter to me. I care about Jay, and if you don't let us help her than we'll do it ourselves."

Kate was silent for a moment.

"Fine." Her voice was quiet. "I give up. But what I said was right, you can't save me. I'm beyond helping now."

"Then what can we do?" Jordie hissed, annoyed.

Kate looked up. "Fine the old quarry, and find a way to melt the gemstone. If you do anything else, the planet will implode. The gemstone is the core."

Stevie blinked, shocked. "Th-thank you!"

Kate rolled her eyes. "Whatever. Your friends are free now. Bye."
