This AU is set in the 1920's, in Japan. Giyuu is a painter by the countryside and Shinobu is a school teacher for a small school. I'm not sure how accurate this is in envisioning the 1920's of Japan, but I'm willing to try.
..................................................................Wake up, paint, eat, paint, sleep. This was the life of Tomioka Giyuu. Giyuu was a painter who had been scrambling to sell his paintings for the last few months. The financial status of those who lived like him was always unstable, but now, the times were rough for everyone. The war had stopped 2 years ago, and the economy was still trying to fix itself.
Giyuu was yet again preparing to set off for the day. The man found he had much better chances of painting something if he did it outdoors. His favourite spot was in a meadow by a small, gravel road and a farm. The farmer hadn't shooed him off yet, and so it became his go-to-spot. This meadow had some wild flowers growing in it, steady ground, and shade. It was the perfect spot for a painter.
.
Shinobu, on the other hand, was a girl raised in the city. She had good education and had moved to the countryside to teach the children living there. All the children adored her, and also respected her. The only problem was that Shinobu was also favoured by men, and this wasn't what she wanted at all. She was quite happy being single, living her simple life. Maybe once or twice she thought about it, but, she supposed the right man would someday appear for her... if it was ment to be.
.
Shinobu walked along the road she usually took to get to work, only to be stopped by her neighbor on the way.
-Shinobu-chan, so good to see you!" A younger woman greeted her, smiling.
-Hello, and good morning." Shinobu said in response.
-I need to ask a favour. When you come home from work, could you pick up a few eggs from the farmer down by the road? I'm going to be too busy today, and my mother is too old to do it herself." The woman pleaded. Shinobu thought for a moment. "Well, it would be rude to refuse, I think I have the time."
-Sure, no problem." She answered.
-Thank you, I owe you one!" The woman thanked Shinobu enthusiastically.
.
Alright class, have a good evening and get home safe!" Shinobu dismissed her students. Children of many different ages said their goodbyes and packed up to go home. It was almost time for sundown.
.
Shinobu hummed as she walked to the farmer. She almost never had to take this road, but, it was a nice place for its scenery. Maybe she should take this road more often...
-Hello, I am here on the behalf of Kazuko Suzuki!" The Shinobu called out outside the farmers house. It was quiet for a moment. The farm was considerably large, and it smelled strongly of animals and manure. Finally, the door to the house opened and a middle age man stepped outside.
-Ah yes, I presume miss Suzuki was busy today?" The man smiled. Shinobu noded.
-Come on in then, I'll prepare the eggs." The man beckoned Shinobu inside the house and Shinobu followed him.
.
Shinobu sat down on a wooden chair by a small table as she waited. The house was decorated in a mild manner and felt quite cozy. Soon, the man returned with a box of eggs. Shinobu smiled and stood up to bow.
-Thank you, I'll give these to Suzuki."
-Thank you. Hmm... You're Shinobu Kocho, aren't you?" The man asked.
-Thats right. You have a lovely farm" Shinobu answered.
-Bah! It's nothing to boast about. Though that painter sure loves it." He shook his head.
-Painter?" Shinobu asked, she didn't think she'd seen a painter in the town before.
-Yes yes, Tomioka Giyuu, keeps to himself most of the time, but he's a good man. He even made me a painting of my farm." The farmer pointed at a wall, and Shinobu's eyes followed to see a painting of the farm on the brown walls. The painting was really good, detailed and pleasing to look at.
-He seems like a talented painter." Shinobu agreed.
-Yes, only if he could see that, it might bring him more fame." The man sighed. He then smiled slightly.
-Maybe, if you see him, you should talk to him." Shinobu was a little shocked.
-Me? Why me?" She asked. The farmer laughed slightly.
-You have knack for dealing with kids. Tomioka should be a piece of cake in comparison."
-Maybe..." Shinobu said thoughtfully.
.
Shinobu was walking home, careful to not drop the eggs. She looked around to see the meadow the farmer was talking about, and who was there? None other than Giyuu Tomioka.
-Maybe I should talk to him now, before I forget... But then again, I promised to deliver these.." Shinobu thought out loud. In the end, she decided to deliver the eggs first.
.
A week or two passed, Shinobu was always too busy and forgot to talk to the painter, irritating, sure. But what could you do? Everyone has their responsibilities, Shinobu could find time to talk to him later.
It was only after Tomioka was spotted near the school on a quiet evening, golden light in the sky, that Shinobu finally found an excuse to talk to the painter.
-Hello, I'm Shinobu Kocho." She introduced herself to the man. The painter hardly seemed to notice the teacher, because he kept on gliding his brush along the canvas he had with him. His back was facing the road, his eyes concentraited on drawing the image of the school building on paper. Shinobu sighed, he had completely missed her introduction. The teacher tapped on the man's shoulder, this seemed to jolt him back to the real world. He blinked, seemingly dazed and then started to speak.
-I'm sorry, I must have gotten too deep in to painting." He said these words to Shinobu.
-It is alright, might I ask why you are painting the school?" Shinobu inquired. Giyuu stopped for a moment, before answering.
-I needed a change of scenery, for whatever reason, I felt like I had to paint the school today." He answerd honestly. Shinobu glanced at the canvas, she could see the shape of the stone building starting to form, as well as the horizon in the background.
-Well, I think it looks beautiful already." Shinobu complimented his work. Giyuu seemed to smile a little at her comment.
-You wouldn't mind if I come back tomorrow to work on my painting, I presume?" He asked. Shinobu let out a small giggle.
-By all means, I wish to see this painting when it is complete."
