Giyuu had a hard time adjusting to his growing wings. They were black like his hair and itched because the baby feathers were falling off and being replaced with his adolescent feathers. These feathers were longer and more vibrant in colour than his baby ones.

-It's all going to be fine." His sister would say and stroke his hair. She had gone trough her wing-growth-spurt a few years prior. Her wings were almost as large as their fathers, and just as silky as their mothers. Giyuu wanted to grow out his wings fast, so that he could start flying too. Almost everyone else in his class had already grown their adolescent feathers. At 11 years old, having smaller wings than most was pretty embarrasing.

It was yet another night in summer. The air was warm and smelled of flowers that grew in the garden under Giyuu's window. The young avian was sitting on the edge of a balcony, gazing at the moon. He was kicking his bare feet slowly, back and forth. He had been having trouble sleeping because of the growing itching in his wings. He had tried to preen himself to get rid of some useless and damaged feathers, but, as he couldn't reach some of his feathers without help, it was not working.

That didn't stop Giyuu from trying. Giyuu started to try and preen himself yet again, only being able to reach a few of the pesky feathers that were the cause of his insomnia at the moment.

Suddenly, he heard a steady wingbeat to his right. the boy thought nothing of it, maybe it was another winged human going on a late night stroll. That is, until he heard the voice of a child call out to him.

-Are your wings itching?" Giyuu looked up from his wings and saw a girl with scaily dragon wings Infront of him, flapping her wings every other second to keep herself in the air. Before he knew it, his mouth answerd.

-No." He lied. The girl snorted and landed on the balcony, tucking her wings behind her back so that they weren't in the way.

-Sure, and I don't have wings." She retorted. Giyuu snickered and went back to looking at his wings, his itching only getting worse.

-Look, I can see they itch. Believe me, my wings do the same twitching when I can't preen my scales well enough." She sighed. The girl sat down beside Giyuu and brushed away some of her purple and black hair from her eyes with her hand.

-Yeah, well I'm just learning how to do it, it's not like I'm always going to itch." Giyuu muttered under his breath.

-No need to get defensive. I'm Shinobu Kochou, a dragon winged human, by the way." The girl introduced herself. She looked at Giyuu, expecting him to introduce himself.

-... I'm Giyuu Tomioka, a bird winged human." Giyuu replied hesitantly. From what he had heard, Dragon winged humans are nothing but trouble.

-Well, Giyuu, want some help with preening?" She asked. Giyuu glared at the girl, he wasn't a big fan of letting other people touch his wings.

-No thanks." He said. Shinobu shrugged.

-Alright, have fun being itchy then." She smiled, her purple eyes glinting with amusement.

A few moments passed, Shinobu hummed and kicked her legs, bored. Giyuu was still struggling with the feathers that were out of his reach. Finally, the boy let out a groan and gave up. He glanced at the dragon winged girl.

-Fine, I need help." He said, defeated. Shinobu perked up and grinned.

-I knew it!" She looked absolutely delighted by the boy's defeated face.

-Will you help me or not?" Giyuu snapped, irritated.

-Yes. Just stay still and spread your wings." Shinobu said, ignoring his tone.

Giyuu did as told, he spread his wings and turned so that his back faced Shinobu. The girl first ran her hands trough the plumage, trying to find loose feathers. Tugging lightly on feathers to see if they were falling, healthy, or pin feathers. Pin feathers hurt when they were pulled out, so Shinobu tried to be careful. She didn't have feathers, sure, but she knew the pain of having a wrong scale pulled out.

Soon, Shinobu was hard at work, she got the feathers that Giyuu couldn't reach and was enjoying the feeling of his soft feathers. Giyuu had to admit, her careful preening felt nice. Giyuu made no moves to protest. He decided to enjoy the careful hands and soft movements. Giyuu could feel himself relax. He was actually kind of dissapointed when Shinobu finally stopped. She had pulled out all the feathers that were making Giyuu itch. A pile of around 20 feathers lay next to them.

-Thanks, I guess." Giyuu thanked the girl. He tried to make it sound like he didn't really care, but in all honesty, he was greatful to her.

-No problem, bird brain." Shinobu smiled, standing up. Giyuu opened his mouth to argue that he wasn't a bird brain, but, Instead, he said.

-Ugh... You dragon wings are so rude." Shinobu let out a loud laugh at him, her wings sprung out and she clutched her stomach.

-You look so funny when you sulk!" She exclaimed. Giyuu was a little annoyed, but he couldn't help but smile to himself, he was kinda sulking.

-Yeah yeah, whatever." He grinned.

-I should get going before my sister or my parents notice I'm gone." The dragon girl suddenly said. Giyuu looked up at her.

-Will I see you again?" He asked, his tone a little sad at the thought of not seeing her.

-Sure you will, I usually fly around these parts.. I could teach you how to fly too!" She decided. Giyuu blinked in surprise, he hadn't told her he couldn't fly.

-How did you know I can't fly yet?"

-It's obvious, your wings don't feel like they have much muscle in them, which means you don't use them to fly." She said. Giyuu blushed out of embarrasment.

-Oh... Ok."

-Anyway... Bye!" She called. She then leaned off the balcony, her back facing the dimly lit garden. Giyuu's heart jumped to his troath as he scrambled to the edge to see Shinobu. The girl saved herself just in time by snapping her wings open and then flapping them, shooting up to the sky.
