FFI
Angst
.................................................................

-So, how long have you been a grim reaper?" Shinobu asked hoarsely. Her body was shutting down even as she tried to speak.

-I do not know, for as long as I can remember." Giyuu replied.

This was... Unfortunate, to say the least. Shinobu had been unlucky, she had developed a prion disease called Fatal Familial Insomnia. FFI for short. It was bad luck for sure, but not entirely shocking. Shinobu's older sister and her grandmother had both died of the same disease. Now Shinobu was bound to a hospital room as exhaustion slowly claimed her life. She wished that she had cherished her sleep more when she was younger. The worst part was the delusions and headache. At first, she had wanted to be a nurse, but, after spending almost 8 months confined to a room, the thought of working in a hospital sickened her.

At first, Shinobu thought she was seeing another one of her delusions when Giyuu suddenly appeared in her room. Shinobu tried to ignore the cloaked figure in her hospital room, believing if she ignored him long enough, he'd vanish. She had become used to seeing hallucinations, and this seemed like any other. That was until he reached out to touch her hand. He was really there, not an illusion made up by her sickness.

His hands were callous and cold, devoid of warmth. His eyes sparkled like the night sky and his body was ghostly pale. He was beautiful, more beautiful that anything or anyone Shinobu had ever seen. She had asked him who he was, and his response seemed like a bad joke.

-I am a grim reaper." He had introduced himself. He explained to her that it was his job to guide her in to the afterlife, to take her soul. Shinobu laughed at first, the grim reaper seemed like a fairytale. But seeing him summon a scythe made her realise he was being honest. Shinobu was sure she had more time. On the other hand, she knew that the sleep deprivation was going to kill her, sooner or later she would have to accept it. Giyuu, as the grim reaper called himself, was staring at her, his eyes troubled.

-I'm dying?" She asked, and she almost laughed.

-Yes." The confirmation hit Shinobu harder than she thought it would. But the brutal honesty was actually refreshing to her. From the very start, people would lie to her and tell her she'd be ok. She knew she was getting worse and worse, yet people kept telling her she'd be fine. It was only a week ago, that even her little sister Kanao could no longer lie to her. In fact, she said nothing at all, she didn't have to. She knew. And Shinobu understood that she couldn't bring herself to admit it out loud.

She had felt lonely at first when she arrived at the hospital. This loneliness was eased after she met her room mate, an older woman with a failing heart. She had been in and out of the hospital for years. Shinobu knew they both shared the same fate. The woman had become a close friend to Shinobu in the 8 months they shared a room. Eventually, time would come for the woman to part from her. Deep down, Shinobu knew that time was running out for both of them. Shinobu had lost her ability to speak in the last stages of her disease. She spent a lot of time laying in bed, staring out the window. The night before her room mate died, she sat with Shinobu and talked to her. Shinobu couldn't respond, but she registered what she was saying, and she thought her room mate must have known that. Her last words were playing on repeat in Shinobu's head.
"You shouldn't fear dying, but you also shouldn't regret living."

-I understand.. but, am I going to the good place?" Shinobu's voice was hopeful.

-I... Can not answer that. I have never been in judgement myself." Giyuu admited. Shinobu looked at him, her eyes showing she was confused.

-Judgement is where they decide wether you deserve paradise, or if you are to be punished." He explained. Shinobu was still confused. So, he wasn't a human then? Wouldn't every human have to go trough judgement after they died?

-I was offered the job of a grim reaper as soon as I died, but because I accepted, I will never be able to be in paradise. I chose to guide others who died." It was like he could read her mind.

-Was it an easy decision?" She didn't know why she wanted to hear more. But the grim reaper seemed to be ok with sharing.

-I wanted to, I never had any family to go to in paradise, and sitting still with nothing do for eternity didn't really seem appealing." He said bluntly. Shinobu nodded, like she understood, but truly she didn't.

-I know it's hard to accept that you're dying, but we need to leave soon." Giyuu stated. Shinobu looked up to the hospital ceiling, a small sigh leaving her lips. She smiled.

-I'm tired... so tired.. I have been ready for a long time." She said, her eyes twinkling weakly and her voice faltering. Giyuu's eyes flashed with what might have been sadness, but the look was gone too quickly for Shinobu to be sure.

-Then, you need to stand up." He said. Shinobu looked back down to her legs. They no longer worked well, the exhaustion leaving her body weak. She pulled the covers off her body, a chill running up her spine from the sudden cold. She glanced at Giyuu, who was giving her a nod. The woman flung her legs to the edge of the bed, and then tried to stand, her legs failing to support her. However, before she could flop back on the bed, she felt a firm hand at her hip. She looked up to see the grim reaper close to her. He steadied her and let her get used to standing for a moment before letting go.

-Alright then, give me your hand." The grim reaper instructed Shinobu. She looked at him as he reached out his hand, offering it to her. Shinobu took one last fleeting look out the hospital window, gentle rain tapping on the glass. She took his hand, and he raised his chythe to her troath. She had expected it to hurt and had closed her eyes, waiting for the sharp pain. It never came, and she opened her eyes to see she was no longer in her hospital room. She was standing in a space with no light aside from the stary skies above the pitch black ground her feet were set on.

-Where are we?" She asked, amazed at the sight.

-This is limbo, I was given the permission to ask you this before you head to judgement." Giyuu replied, his voice trailing off at the "before you go to judgement" part. Shinobu looked at him, waiting for him to continue.

-Shinobu Kocho, I want you to become a grim reaper." He announced. Shinobu was taken aback, why had he chosen to recrute her?

-Huh, me? Why me?" She was baffled. Giyuu looked at her before speaking.

-I think you'd do a good job, you know how to handle people well, and you are far more approachable than I am." He stated. Shinobu wasn't sure how to feel about it. On one hand, she had her sister and grandmother to go to, but, on the other hand...

-Will I still be able to visit my family?" She asked. Giyuu noded.

-I think so, you just won't be able to stay. That is the price of becoming a grim reaper, you won't get to rest for eternity." Shinobu looked up to the stars, they seemed brighter than they had been in a long time. She had made up her mind.

-Then I accept." She smiled. She swore she could see him smile too.
