Giyuu had indeed returned the next day, and the next, and the day after that. The man had brought his tools and his unfinished painting of the town's school. He considered it to be one of the only good places around him, for the war had dealt a great blow to Japan and the country was still trying to get a good hold on itself again. Giyuu felt at ease, watching the small town and painting it had done wonders for his mood lately. Hunger gnawed at his stomach like usual. Giyuu had barely gotten enough money together to buy food. He only managed to gather some milk, bread and rice, but he was trying to regulate it the best he could, so it would last longer. It left him feeling dizzy and tired, but he hung on.His friend, Sabito, had offered to get Giyuu a job down by the fishing port. But Giyuu assured his friend that he didn't need the job, he could support himself. Some days Giyuu wished he had taken the offer. But then again, painting was his passion, and without it, he didn't know what to do with his life.
Shinobu came only a little after Giyuu had settled on a spot. She was carrying a large bag, no doubt filled with books and papers for her work at the school. She had waved at him and smiled, Giyuu waved back at her and watched her go inside the school.
The day dragged on quite slowly. The hunger made it hard to concentrate, and it was particularly windy today, making the paint harder to control. He saw the kids come out for a recess and decided to take a break as well.
Giyuu yawned and stretched. He could see Shinobu in the school yard, probably talking with the kids. He was surprised to see her walking in his direction.
-Hello, Kochou." Giyuu dipped his head to Shinobu in greeting. The woman smiled and went to stand beside him, glancing at the painting.
-You have done such a great job with this, it's beautiful!" She exclaimed. Giyuu suppressed a smile and straightened his back.
-It's not done yet, but thank you." Shinobu hummed and turned to face him, holding out something.
-I brought you some lunch. I can't help but notice you never bring food with you when you are here painting." Shinobu said. She offered the wooden box to Giyuu and he was shocked at the sudden gesture. He knew food was still expensive right now, and most families lived on a tight budget.
-I can't take food from you, it's hard enough to get it in the first place." He tried to refuse but Shinobu shook her head and sighed.
-Quit being stubborn, it's not a problem for me. I have enough food, I assure you."
Shinobu reached to give it to him again, and after a small moment of hesitation, Giyuu bowed in gratitude and took it. It smelled delicious and he was so hungry that he almost drooled. He was happy to have something more filling and lifted the lid of the lunchbox. What was inside was riceballs, chicken and some green beans. It was a small lunch but he wasn't going to complain when it looked so good.
-May I eat with you?" Shinobu asked, sitting down on the grass. Giyuu felt like saying no wasn't an option. He sat beside her, saving some space between them for comfort. The two talked, getting to know each other. Shinobu looked proud and happy talking about her students. Giyuu respected her for how she handled the children. It wasn't easy to keep track of all 16 of them.
.
-I should go, the kids will be done with their lunch soon." Shinobu said, getting up and dusting her clothes off. Giyuu nodded and got up too.
-Alright, and thank you for the food again." Giyuu bowed again.
-It's no problem, Tomioka-san." She smiled and turned to the school.
-See you later!" She called.
-See you..." He said quietly.
