RED ROSES

“Sheʼs still not replying to my texts.” I sulked in the corner of the sofa as Calvin sighed out of disappointment. That kind of reaction always gets me embarrassed.

“Tumawag ako sa kaniya kanina.” simpleng sabi ni Calvin. His simple words brought a huge impact!

I stood up straight and my eyes widened in excitement. The feeling was like winning a huge competition. “Talaga?! Anong sabi?” hindi ko na mapigilan ang saya.

Sa kabilang banda nakita ko kung paano umirap si Calvin. Parang sinasabi ng mata niya na napaka-childish ng reaction ko. “Sana tinanong mo muna kung sumagot ba.” bumuntong hininga ang gago.

Napabalik ako sa inuupuan ko kanina. Nakasandal ako sa gilid ko habang ang binti ko ay itinaas ko para yakapin ang mga ito. I feel dumbfounded and depressed.

“By the way, sumagot siya and nakausap ko siya.” dagdag ni Calvin. Sumagot naman pala, pinag-overthink muna ako. Tsk.

“Anong sabi?” magkasalubong ang kilay ko.

“She said she super hate you.” Calvin said. Was he teasing me or just stating the true? How can I tell? Heʼs wearing his poker face again.

“Tapos?”

“Just kidding.” he smirked. At that point, I glared at him. “She wasnʼt feeling well yesterday. If you wanna talk to her so bad, call her now.”

“Salamat.” I calmly said.

I went back to my room so I can finally call her. By the time I entered my room and picked my phone from my table, I felt uncomfortable. What should I say when we got to finally talk? Is she still mad at me?

I dialed her number and it was nerve wracking. “I can do this.” I put my fist above my chest, affirming and let out a sigh.

When she picked up, I immediately spoke, “Lorraine... Iʼm sorry.”

“There are tons of missed calls from you. What do you need from me?” she sounded so cold for me. Sa tuwing magkausap kami ay hindi ganoon ang tono ng pagsasalita niya.

“Are you mad at me?” I asked.

“So what if I am?”

I knew it. Nuʼng una, akala ko ay nagtatampo lang o ano pero galit pala siya.

I can clearly recall the first time Iʼve heard her speak like that. It was when Mr. Lopez apologized to her and she was emotionless and cold that time. It creeps me out all of the sudden.

“Iʼm really sorry for yesterday.” the nervous that I am, I started fidgeting my fingers. “Can we meet up now?” I bit my lower lip and close my eyes shut. I really am nervous right now. Half of my mind thinks she will say yes and the other half was no.

“We are on a call. You can say what you want here.”

I knew that this wasnʼt going to be that easy. The probability shows in her coldness.
