The present-day murders in Mystic Falls remind Damon of a similar crime spree a century earlier. In flashbacks to 1912, Damon recalls a beautiful vampire, Sage, who showed him a whole new way to exist. Sheriff Forbes warns Damon not to get involved in her investigation, but Damon is convinced she's going after the wrong suspect. Ellie and Matt resort to breaking and entering in their search for evidence to prove Dr. Fell is a murderer. For reasons known only to her. Rebekah, becomes interested in locating one of the town's oldest fleet landmarks. Finally, Ellie comes to a new understanding of the path her life has taken, and Damon makes an emotional confession to Stefan.
*Flashback, Mystic Falls, 1912...*
Gerald Forbes and another man stepped out of the tower building...
"Will you get home all right, Mr. Salvatore? I can send a police vehicle." Gerald says.
"A little winter chill never hurts anyway, Sheriff Forbes."
"I am less concerned about the cold, more for your safety." Said Gerald.
"One councilman's murder doesn't make an epidemic, Gerald. Good night."
"Good night." Said Gerald.
Mr. Salvatore made his way home. He heard a sound and turned around. When he saw nothing, he turned around again, and soon he was stabbed.
*End of Flashback...*
The next morning, Liz and Carol walked across the road...
"The mystery is not gonna get solved any faster... with you yelling at me, Carol."
"We have two council members and an attempted murder on our hands. If you have a suspect, it is your duty to keep me in the loop." Carol said.
"No. It's my duty to make sure I don't accidentally accuse an innocent person of being a killer."
