Shay was laying on the bed in Calums bedroom, the rest of the group was still in the dining area eating brunch. But when she got back she had lost her appetite and decided to hide away in Calums room, hoping to make some sense of the situation she had found herself in. Calum had turned completely cold somewhere last night and she tried her absolute hardest to connect the dots and figure out why. But with the combination of the copious amount of alcohol she had consumed and the fact that so much had taken place the night before, she wasn't able to make sense of it. She had briefly considered confronting Calum about it but ultimately figured that he would approach her when he was ready. If she were in his shoes she would've wanted to have some space to get her thoughts straight. Even if it's painful and confusing. She had just decided to put a movie on to distract herself when she heard a few soft knocks on the door. She yelled for the person who was knocking that they could come in and they quickly opened the door to reveal themselves. Calum was standing in the doorway with an expression Shay couldn't read, he seemed a little somber, or mayne stressed? Either way, it didn't look positive.
"Hey you." She whispered, giving him a small smile.
"Hi." He replied, staring at her for a moment too long before clearing his throat and continuing. "Can we talk?"
The smile fell from her face as she nodded at him, she shifted to the side of the bed to make space on it for him. He sat down next to her, instinctively resting his hand on her thigh. They sat like that in silence for a while, simply looking at one another.
"What's on your mind?" Shay finally asked once she'd gathered the courage. Calum looked away from her and took a deep breath.
"Is there something wrong with us?" Calum suddenly asked, catching Shay off guard. She looked at him with a confused expression.
"Why do you think there's something wrong with us?" She replied, sounding slightly hurt. Every time they were on the right track something new came along that would throw them off again. The question hurt her slightly. She liked the way they worked, she was happy with him. The realization that he might not feel the same created a larger wound than she would like to admit.
"I just- last night. After Ash and Nia announced their engagement and Laur and Mike revealed that they were going to go public with their relationship it got me thinking. They seem like they are so much further along in their relationship than we are." Calum spoke quickly as if keeping the words inside of him was physically harming him. Shay's frown deepened.
"Slow down, Cal. I don't get what you're trying to say." She said, laying her hand on his.
"What I'm trying to say is that maybe we're doing this all wrong." He motioned between the two of them.
"What?" She spat. "Just because we're not moving at the same pace as our friends are doesn't mean we're doing anything wrong."
"But, Laur and Mike-" Calum started to say before he got interrupted.
"We aren't Lauren and Michael. Just because they've decided that everyone should know about them doesn't mean that we have to do the same. I personally quite like my privacy. Our privacy." She replied, the same fire still present in her voice. Calum looked over at her with the same frown on his face, he opened his mouth to say something but was silenced by Shay's hand.
"And before you even bring up Ash and Nia. I don't want what they have." She said, removing her hand from his face and laying it on her lap.
"What do you mean you don't want what they have? You don't want a healthy relationship?" Cal questioned.
"Don't put words into my mouth, Cal. That's not what I'm saying." She shot back causing Calum to narrow his eyes at her.
"Then what are you saying?" He asked.
"I have no interest in marriage." She said, looking him straight in the eye. Calums entire face went blank. There was no emotion there. He didn't look shocked or sad or angry. It seemed like he hadn't even heard her. A silence engulfed the two.
"Do you not see a future with me?" Calum whispered, finally daring to meet her eyes again. Her expression immediately softened after his question. She put her hand on his cheek before answering.
"Of course I see a future with you." She replied.
"But you just said you don't see yourself getting married." He stated, trying to pull away from her. She strengthened her grip on him before explaining herself.
"That has nothing to do with you. I don't see myself getting married to anyone. I can't envision myself as someone's wife. I'm not saying that I'd never get married but it's not something I want."
Calum stayed silent again, causing her to loosen her grip on him. He quickly scooted away from her.
"Then what are we doing here?" Calum whispered, his eyes red. "If you don't see yourself marrying me. Then I don't know why we're here."
"What are you saying, Cal?" She replies in the same hushed tone.
"I'm saying that maybe we need some time apart." His voice is barely loud enough to hear.
"Are we breaking up right now?" She replied, her eyes glassy.
"I think we are." He sighed, his eyes watering.
Tears spilled out of her eyes, she quickly hid her face in her hands. Calum threw his arm around her and pulled her close. Attempting to keep his tears at bay but failing miserably.
"I love you." She whispered, her voice cracking. Calum tightened his grip on her.
"I love you too." He replied. "I'm just scared that it's not enough." Her tears intensified, causing his heart to break even more. He hated hurting her, hated hurting himself. But he didn't know how he could continue their relationship knowing that her heart wasn't in it a thousand percent. Cause that's what the admission felt like to him. He wanted nothing but to spend the rest of his life with her. Getting married, moving in together, adopting pets. Knowing that she never envisioned that for the two of them hurt him. Even though this broke his heart, he couldn't continue a relationship where they were both headed in different directions.
"I'm sorry." He whispered, pressing a kiss against the side of her head. She suddenly pushed him off.
"I can't do this." She said through her sobs and ran out of the room. As soon as she walked into the hallway she ran into Luke.
"Wow, hey. What happened to you?" He asked, putting his hands on her shoulder to steady her.
"I think I just got broken up with." She stuttered, attempting to catch her breath as tears kept falling down her face. Luke's expression shifted immediately as he pulled her in for a hug. She buried her head in his chest as she continued to sob.
After a moment Luke broke the silence, "Want me to drive you home?" He questioned.
She nodded against his chest and let out a quiet and broken, "Please."
