Willow had been stuck in the car with none other than Steve Rogers for the last hour. She's spent most of that time looking out of the window, watching the world go by.
Up until their recent argument, she had liked Steve. She had felt completely comfortable around him. Speaking to the others, she knew they had been close before... well before the accident.
Captain America was everyone's favourite superhero. The adverts always hyped him up, the press fell over themselves just to get a glimpse of him but not Willow. She was still pissed at him.
What gave him the right to follow her. To accuse her of not being sincere when it comes to Bucky. They all wanted her to stay away from Jeremy but no one would give you a reason why and it was so bloody infuriating
Steve was watching her. He had been for the last hour. Trying to work out how he can apologise to her. Bucky had come to see him the night before, pissed at him for making her feel insecure and wanting him to stay out of things at least for the moment.
He couldn't take the silence a minute longer, so he took a deep breath before reaching out for her 'I'm sorry about the other day. I should've trusted you and I'm sorry I didn't'
Snorting she twisted in her seat to look at him 'You are huh. Tell me Steve... which part are you actually apologising for. The spying on me or was it the fact that you tried to bribe someone into staying away from me. What are you apologising for?'
He squirmed under her intense gaze. She had every right to fire those questions at him but damn she really had that intimidating stare down. Clearly she'd been spending too much time with Bucky 'All of it. I know you won't believe me but I was doing it to protect you. To protect both of you really'
Sighing, Willow looked down at her hands picking at the frayed sweater 'You all keep saying that you're just trying to protect me but none of you are willing to tell me why you want me to stay away from Jeremy'
Without looking away from the road he responded 'You just need to trust us that he's bad news'
Here we again. They were always talking about trust but couldn't seem to trust her that she would make the right decisions if given the right information 'I'm sorry Steve, but I'm not sure that I can do that. Until you guys give me a valid reason not to see him anymore, you need to stop meddling'
'Willow..' but she cut him off before she could hear any more lies spewing from his mouth 'No Steve. I mean it. I don't want to hear about it anymore unless you are willing to tell me the truth'
Conceding defeat, he turned his head to meet her warning glance 'Fine. Just know that I'm sorry for going behind your back like I did. I thought I was doing the right thing by you both but clearly I wasn't'
Slouching back down in her seat satisfied with his answer she reached out to lightly pat him on the arm 'Noted. And apology accepted by the way. Now do you want to turn back and drive us home. No need to pretend you need me for a mission now'
He laughed. Of course she knew it was a cover up so that they could make amends 'Yes ma'am'
********************************
'I think I'm going to sit down with Willow and tell her everything that went down with Jeremy. All of it'
Sam's head twisted round at Bucky's announcement. He had been badgering him for ages to tell her the truth but now it had gone on for so long, Sam wasn't completely sure that it was the right thing to do 'That's big.... Like big big. Are you sure you want to do that?'
Shaking his head and chuckling Bucky turned to his friend 'No. I'm not sure. But let's face it, that good for nothing asshole is trying to worm his way back in and if I don't say anything to her soon, he might actually succeed'
Bucky thought back to the dreams that had been plaguing him lately. No longer were they filled with memories of his killings as the winter soldier but dreams where Willow left him for Jeremy. If he had a choice, he would take the dreams of his time as the winter soldier over these recent dreams any day.
Sensing the inner turmoil that his friend was feeling, Sam tried to be receptive to the announcement 'So when do you think you're going to do it?'
Playing nervously with the tips of his metal arm, Bucky didn't even hesitate in his response 'I was thinking after the party we have coming up. Tony wants us all to be there and I at least want her to enjoy herself before I take that away from her'
'I'm proud of you Buck. This kind of thing takes guts. For what it's worth, I support you all the way. How do you think she will take it?'
Kicking the grass, a nervous habit since he was a child, he lightly shook his head 'honestly I have no idea. But it's getting harder to keep it all from her. And realistically if I want her to trust me again like I did before, I need to do this'
'Willow's really understanding in general so I have no doubt she'll forgive you for wanting to keep this to yourself. She might be angry at first but she'll come round'
'I hope so Sam because my life just doesn't work if she's not in it.'
