Part 5 - Memory Loss

Bucky had called the doctor in when it became apparent that Willow didn't know who he was. The worry clearly evident

'Willow can you tell me the last thing that you remember' Doctor Grey prompted

'I had just got engaged. My partner Jeremy proposed last night. I know I was on my way to friends and family to tell them but everything after leaving the house is hazy'

'Ok and do you know who this man is' the doctor asked looking at Bucky

Willow looked over at the man in the room. He was shifting nervously on the balls of his feet. There was no denying that he was a clearly attractive man with the most amazing eyes but Willow couldn't place him 'He's one of my doctors isn't he'

Bucky felt his heart break at those words and moved closer to her on the bed 'No sweetheart. I'm not your doctor. I'm your husband... Bucky'

Willow recoiled back at his words 'What? No I'm not married. My fiancé is called Jeremy. I don't have a husband. I think maybe you're confused'

'Look on your left hand sweetheart. You see that ring, it matches mine..see' Bucky held out his hand so she could see the ring 'And if you look it will have my name scribed on the ring. I have your name on my ring. It was actually you who suggested that'

Willow slowly turned the ring until she saw the name Bucky and that's when the panic set in 'I don't understand. I can't be married to you. What happened to Jeremy'

Bucky felt helpless watching as Willow spiralled with the news of he had just dropped on her. He went to take her hand in his but this seemed to make everything worse.

'No. Don't touch me. You're lying. You have to be lying. Doctor I don't want him in the room'

'Willow. Please. We can work through this together.'

'GET OUT!'

'Mr Barnes. I think it's best if you wait outside whilst I examine your wife. I'll be out in a minute'

Bucky couldn't stop the tears that were forming in his eyes. He reached down to pull out his phone and dial the number of the one person he knew he could count on 'Steve? I need you to come to the hospital buddy'

'What is it?What's wrong?

'She woke up. Willow woke up but she doesn't remember me. She doesn't even know who I am'

'Shit, I'm on my way buddy' Steve hurriedly stated whilst grabbing his keys on the way out the door 'I'll be there in 10 minutes. Stay calm buddy'

As Steve walked through the hospital corridor he could see Bucky talking animatedly with the doctor. He looked so fragile and lost and Steve knew at that moment that whatever was happening couldn't be good

'Hey bud, doctor. What is going on'

'Willow woke up but she doesn't remember me. She panicked when I told her we were married. I'll never forget that look she gave me. She was genuinely scared'

Steve clasped his hand on Bucky's shoulder 'But she will remember though right? Like is this just temporary doc?'

'At the moment we just don't know. Willow has sustained a serious head injury and it seems that she can't remember anything from the last couple of years' the doctor replied looking sadly at the pair standing before her

'Ok so will she remember them in time?'

'She might but you also have to prepare yourselves for the fact that she might not regain those memories. I know this hurts you Mr Barnes but you have to remember she is really confused right now.'

Bucky nodded at the doctor 'Can I go back in and see her?'

'I'm afraid that Mrs Barnes has confirmed that she didn't want you back in the room with her. I'm so sorry'

'But he's her husband. Can he not just go in anyway?'

The doctor sighed 'I'm afraid not. I can't go against my patients wishes. She did enquire about Nat and Tony, do you know who she's talking it?'

Bucky perked up at that 'Yeah. They're good friends of ours. Do you think it would help if they came to visit?'

'It can't hurt to get them here. She also wanted to see Jeremy.'

Steve looked at them both in shock 'Wait Jeremy as in her ex Jeremy? As in the slimeball Jeremy?'

Bucky looked down defeatedly 'Yeah. She thinks she's still engaged to him. I don't get how she remembers him but not me.'

'Mr Barnes....'

'Please call me Bucky. It sounds less formal'

'Ok Bucky, what do you want to do about Jeremy?'

'He's not to be allowed to see her under any circumstances,ok? He's not a good man and I'm presuming that she doesn't remember what went down between them.'

Bucky watched at the doctor nodded 'in that case as her husband, I don't authorise for him to see her'

Steve hated the atmosphere that was building up 'Ok...on that note, let me call Nat and Tony and get them to come down here. If Willow remembers them then they can help with getting her to see you'

Bucky looked through the door at his wife now sleeping peacefully hoping that in her dream state, she at least remembers him because Bucky knew he wasn't giving her up without a fight.
