Part 46 - Secrets never stay hidden

After trying to read the same page in her book for the last twenty minutes, Willow threw it down in frustration. Although she couldn't put her finger on it, there was something in the way that Steve was behaving that was bothering her.

Knowing that there was no way she was going to relax whilst her mind was whirring at a hundred mile an hour, she begrudgingly pushed herself out of the chair to hunt down the one person who might be able to help her solve this puzzle.

Following the humming coming from the kitchen, Willow sighed in relief seeing that the one person she needed to speak to was there alone. Privacy was key to unlocking this mystery without anyone else sticking their oar in

Throwing herself dramatically into the stool across from the breakfast bar, Wanda paused her cooking to give her friend a once over "You look like you're up to something. What's up"

Appearing unfazed by Wanda's question, Willow feigned nonchalance "Oh am I that transparent. Of course you would pick up that something is wrong with me. I really need you to me a favour"

Eyeing Willow suspiciously, she slightly tilted her head before asking her to continue "Ok my interest has piqued, what is it you need"

Looking around to make sure no one was around to hear, Willow leaned over "Ok let me just get this out and I need you to not say no, ok" Wanda nodded in understanding "I need you to look inside Steve's mind for me and project what you see into my mind. Just like you did for me and Bucky before"

"Ok, any particular reason why you need me to do that because I have to be honest I wasn't expecting that"

Sliding off the stool, Willow paced for a bit before taking a breath and continuing "He's lying to me... about what happened when he went to visit Jeremy. He can't look at me when I bring it up and he always changes the subject, which has me questioning about what Steve could possibly be hiding. So, will you help me?"

Blinking a few times processing the information, Wanda turned down the gas on the stove to give Willow her full attention "I'm really not comfortable doing this. I just want to throw that out there before I agree to doing this"

Noticing that Wanda hadn't said no, she turned hesitantly grabbing her friends hands in her own "So does that mean you'll do it. Will you look into his mind for me?"

Gripping her tightly, Wanda pulled Willow into a hug "Yes I'll do it" pulling back to look into her eyes she continued "But only because I think you've been through a lot and you've been lied to enough already over the last year"

"Thank you Wanda. You're a literal Angel I swear. Jarvis... can you tell Captain Rogers to come in here please but make sure no one else hears"

Hearing Jarvis calling out to him and asking him to go to the kitchen certainly grabbed Steve's attention. Eyeing Willow nervously knowing that she seemed to pick up on his need to change the subject earlier, he tried to act as uninterested as possible "Hey, what's up?"

Biting her lip slightly, debating whether this was the right thing to do, she bit the bullet "I'm sorry that I have to do this to you Steve but I know there's something you're not telling me"

Looking behind Steve, she nodded her head "Now Wanda." Allowing the spark to flow through her fingers she lightly waved her hands near Steve's head as the memory was shared between all of them

Flashback
Knowing that he was putting himself in dangerous territory, Steve looked at the low life in front of him "So? Do we have a deal?"

Jeremy let out a bubble of laughter "No, we don't have a deal Captain. I don't need money. Thanks to all the money I've managed to inherit, that isn't something you can win me over with. I want Willow. I want her at my side and I will fight for her this time because make no mistake... Willow belongs to me"

Walking menacingly towards Jeremy, he continued "Well then, maybe I should let Willow know how you came into all of that money you've inherited recently"

Not even the least bit phased, Jeremy moved towards Steve, closing the distance between them "You do whatever you need to do but tell me Steve.... Does Willow know you're in love with her"

That wasn't what Steve expected and as much as he tried to hide the shock, he knew he hadn't succeeded when he saw the smirk on the other man's voice "You don't know what you're talking about"

Jeremy looked down chuckling "I'll take that as a no then. What about Bucky? Is he aware of how you feel about his wife"

Grabbing Jeremy by the collar of his shirt, he threw him up against the wall "This has nothing to do with what we are discussing so cut the crap"

Pushing the super soldier back, knowing he was getting under his skin, spurred him on "It has everything to do with it when we're all in love with the same woman, don't you think. We all have skeletons in our closets but are you ready for yours to come out"

Willow gasped as the vision stopped, watching Steve's face crumple in the realisation that the secret he had been hiding was now out there "Steve.... I'm sorry"

Steve looked down with his arms crossed, he couldn't bear to look at Willow in that moment "Please don't. Please don't say anything. This is exactly why I wanted this secret to stay buried"

Feeling her gut wrenching, Willow tried to fix the situation "But don't you think we should talk about this Steve. I mean, if you have feelings for me.."

"Willow please stop. I accepted a long time ago that your heart belonged to Bucky and I'm ok with that so can we please let this lie. Please leave this in the past"

Willow nodded her head sadly knowing that things would never be the same between them from this point on.
