HOPE CATHEDRAL was filled to capacity the next morning for the solemnization of Michael and Sonia's marriage. Several reporters for different media houses were in the congregation and some were outside, taking pictures of the celebrities, business magnates, and politicians as they entered the church. Sonia's shoes were bought by David, but she did not know this. The glossy red 2210 Nissan Xtrail that will bring Sonia to the church was also one of his. From the analysis of everything, on the face of it, Sonia seems to be making the biggest mistake of her entire life, throwing away a ready - made life of love and comfort for a place of uncertainty with no allies except the man in her heart.
Foolishness.
That is exactly what Georgina still held unto. She will be forever baffled at how a beautiful and well written marital blessing could be thrown away because of a mere chemical reaction in the brain. Love? What a crazy thing it is. Her mind was all over the place as she danced into the church with three other ladies who were bridesmaids for the day with the four groomsmen, including the Best Man. She carefully programmed her mind to be ranting while at the same time presenting a bright smile for all to see. As she took her place in front of the church with the others, she took a good look at her dear friend David, he was withering away on the inside but looking hot as ever.
Stupid Sonia threw Gold away for a mere piece of rusty iron. What did she ever see in this puny guy?
Before her mind could continue with its monologue, the traditional wedding theme of "here comes the bride" began to play in the background as everyone turned to behold the young woman that stole the heart of the shy and introverted Michael Rogers.
Introversion or forced isolation?
Georgina hissed silently as she looked at Michael. He was genuinely happy and unfortunately she could not be happy for him. She braced herself for anything that could happen because she was briefed on Mrs. Rogers' antics and displeasure.
Sonia walked into the cathedral in her father's arm, dressed in a pure white long-sleeved dress, gracefully flowing around her as she walked to meet her beloved. Her lovely face was covered in a lovely veil which gave a glimpse of the beauty behind it. Michael's breath hitched as he beheld the beauty before him.
But something was also "wrong" as Sonia drew closer to the altar. She noticed that David was standing right behind Michael as his Best Man. Her eyes bulged in shock but she quickly recovered and continued with her walk to the altar. Questions began to fill her mind in rapid succession.
What was he doing there?
When did Michael choose him to be his Best Man?
Why did both men keep her in the dark about it?
She struggled a little but finally succeeded in fixing her eyes on Michael, knowing all too well that David being his Best Man was Mrs. Rogers' doing. A tear fell from her eye at this blatant show of pure hatred from her mother –in- law to be. She sneaked a look at Mrs. Rogers and saw her smiling broadly.
You will not defeat me Mrs. Rogers. You will not bend nor break me and that is a promise.
Her smile brightened when her father finally handed her over to him. This is the beginning of her new life with Michael and nobody will spoil it. Michael held to her hands gently and as he looked into her eyes through the veil, he saw the beginning of life of bliss and prosperity. He pursued her with all his heart and she has now become his.
Sonia made sure to avoid making any eye contact with David and paid attention to her pastor as he began the ceremony of joining them. If there was one thing she was sure of at that moment, it was that her love for Michael might not be enough to take her through this next stage of her life. She must be strong and tough, because her new mother will not make things easy for her and she is fearlessly throwing her ammunitions already.
Lord, I prayed before accepting Michael's proposal. I know you want me in this family and I know you will give me all the strength I need on this journey. Please help me to represent you well in this family. Help me Lord.
As the pastor declared them man and wife, Michael kissed his bride and gave her a sweet embrace, whispering beautiful words into her ear. She broke into numerous giggles, to the detriment of Mrs. Rogers and Tiffany Anderson, who was also in the congregation.
Michael gazed into her eyes and said,
"I love you forevermore Sonia. No one can separate us now. No one."
The next day, David left for his NYSC post at Kaduna State, while Sonia decided to forgive her mother-in-law. It will be bad to start on a wrong note so she decided to let it go, hoping that it would be the end of the matter.
How wrong she was.
