The conference hall of OWOLAFE INDUSTRIAL was filled. The hall was looking exquisite and influential, wealthy and powerful men and women of the business world in Nigeria and neighbouring countries were in attendance. Many business owners that made bids to buy the company also came to see who won. Members of the press were there, ready to capture the moment of the unveiling of the new CEO. David and Caroline were also present, together with the Rogers.
As people chatted away, the MC called all their attention to the next item on the program: speech time by the outgoing CEO, Benjamin Owolafe. Owolafe shared the history of his company, their achievements and struggles in recent time, as well as the need to find someone to rescue the company.
"Our lawyers have been taking care of the deal and like everyone else, I am ready to be surprised."
The crowd laughed and he stepped down from the podium. He remains a shareholder in the company, but not the majority shareholder as he was for many years.
"The time has indeed come ladies and gentlemen!" The MC said in dramatic fashion as he invited one of the shareholders to do the honours of announcing and inviting the new CEO to the podium.
The tall beautiful woman in her late fifties walked to the podium to make the announcement. Her entire attire screamed "Money" and she was more than happy to flaunt it.
"Please, let us welcome to OWOLAFE INDUSTRIAL, our new CEO; Mrs. Sonia Rogers."
A hush fell over the room as Sonia smiled brightly.
Perfect. She loved the shock on all their faces. The rise of the poor from grass to grace is always captivating: Cinderella turned Queen.
Sonia walked majestically to the podium. Slowly the shock began to wear off and people began to clap. Sonia wore a peach slim-fit two-piece suit, with a magnificent hat to match: she did not come to play at all. Mrs. Rogers senior was boiling and screaming inside, but of course, no one heard her. David and Caroline exchanged looks of shock and confusion, but did not utter a word.
If anger could kill, Benjamin Owolafe would have dropped dead. He threw a cold look at Julianna Rogers, but she ignored him. How did this bypass him?
Sonia stood behind the podium, all smiles, all beauty with brain, and a mind set out to build a backbone that no one in the world could break, and it begins with having the right connections in society, and more than enough money.
Sonia was congratulated for such a great achievement, and was showered with praises for rising out of her pain and making such remarkable comeback. She was soaked in camera flashes and she knew she would be on the front pages of most newspapers around the country and neighbouring country for a while. She has a big vision to move the company forward and no one can stop her. But another reason for coming after OWOLAFE INDUSTRIALS in the guise of a rescue mission was also to spite Benjamin.
"Speak of the devil..." She murmured as Benjamin smiled at her and asked to speak to her alone.
When they were far from earshot, he blasted,
"How dare you? Why my company for goodness' sake?"
Sonia smiled, "Would you have cared if it was someone else? My goodness Benjamin! You should be grateful! I saved your drowning company and you should be thanking me right now." She replied with feigned compassion.
Benjamin remained silent but was really furious.
It was Sonia's turn to be angry.
"I did you no wrong and yet you came after me time and time again! How much did Julianna offer you that you would stoop so low to conspire against an innocent woman and even after I lost my husband! What kind of a wicked soul are you?"
