Dimitri watched as Kate walked away, her eyes barely glancing at him, both out of respect for his position in the room and out of something that Dimitri couldn't quite place.

He knew that he too hadn't said much to her since Tasha walked in on them, he was afraid that Kate was getting overwhelmed by Tasha's insistence, he was afraid that Tasha was ruining one of the best things that Dimitri found after losing his charge and friend.

Diana glanced at Dimitri, watching as he followed Kate's figure with his eyes, watching how his body coiled with the want to follow after her. They hadn't talked about what Dimitri saw Diana do to Tasha.

Janine also noticed, it was strange for her to see a killing machine so greedily selfish to the point that they wanted to forsake everything that had been taught to them since cradle, all for lust.

Kate suddenly stopped at the door before turning back to everyone in the room, and with a solemn look that most teenagers her age couldn't yet muster, she told them all.

"I am deeply sorry for your loss."

It wasn't much, it would never be enough, but it was something that most Dhampirs didn't get unless the Dhampirs that died were directly related to them. Not even if the people lost were their friends or secret partners.

Yet Kate was willingly giving them her condolences.

With Alec on her hip and the clipboard with the names on one hand, Kate led Lissa out of the room, closing the door, that had previously been ajar, behind her.

"Who's on the list?" Lissa whispered to Kate as they walked back to the the atrium where the rest of the Moroi and Dhampir were located.

Kate handed her the clipboard as she fixed Alec on her hip, suddenly wishing that she'd grabbed the wrap from Dimitri when she picked up Alec from his arms. Lissa's jade eyes scanned the list before they stopped at a name she knew, not well, but well enough.

"Mia's mom is on the list."

The words were whispered but they sounded like gunfire. While they might not get along well with Mia, they knew that theoretically, she should be the first one that Kate talked to. Which, without saying anything, was something that both girls agreed, while Alec clung to Kate tightly, clearly still overwhelmed from the amount of people that were around him, and around Dimitri.

"I can try and hold him while you talk to Mia." Lissa offered, stroking the back of Alec's head, which was something that he allowed others to do to him.

"You saw how he was in that room, with Dimka holding him. He's going to be worse in the ballroom." Kate countered, pressing her lips to Alec's temple, feeling the toddler cling onto her more.
