The lobby of the Dhampir quarters was abuzz the following dusk, Dimitri was going down the stairs first, holding Alec, who was still looking cautiously around, while clinging to Dimitri, while Kate trailed behind.
The clusters of Novices was not uncommon, but the air in the room was, the tension and the fear from the previous day was still present but there was excitement, which was strange. A couple of Freshmen Novices were practically squealing with joy as they spoke in hushed whispers, and close to the staircase, a group of Senior Novices were gesturing wildly, with enthusiastic grins on their faces.
Kate moved her head towards Dimitri, but noticed him not paying attention to anyone except Alec.
"Good morning, золовка. (sister in law.)" Viktoria greeted as she skipped closer to her, watching as Kate gave her a flat look. "I see you slept in my brother's bed again, you know that with a kid in the room, you really should be careful."
Mason and Eddie laughed as they also came to a stop.
"We didn't do anything." Kate began to argue, only for Eddie to interrupt.
"Not with a toddler in the room."
Kate sighed, and slowly turned her flat look towards Eddie, who instantly shut up and looked down, knowing better than to argue, or fight with Kate. "What's going on? Why does the lobby look like a busy beehive?" Kate questioned, looking around the busy room.
"So, you know how everyone's afraid to have their kids come home for Christmas?" Mason started, prompting Kate to nod, "Well, there's this huge ski lodge in Idaho that's exclusively used by royals and rich Moroi. The people who own it are opening it up for Academy students and their families - and actually any other Moroi who want to go. With everyone in one spot, they're going to have a ton of guardians to protect the place, so it'll be totally safe."
"You can't be serious." Kate breathed out.
It wasn't that the idea of being in a lodge didn't please Kate, it pleased everyone. It was a brilliant idea, one that let families reunite safely. It was something that Kate had talked about with Dimitri the previous day in the car.
"We are, and rumour has it, your uncle has something to do with it." Viktoria teased, looping her arm through Kate's and leading her to the cafeteria so that she could get her breakfast.
Kate paled for a moment and faltered, mentally cursing about the fact that she had answered a call from her uncle, to whom she gave a brief overview of what had happened at the Badicas, while in the car with Dimitri.
"Yeah, I don't suspect he's not behind it." Kate sighed, reaching up to rub her temples.
The trio stopped and looked at her confused, "Is it a bad thing?"
