Dimitri made one phone call and a SWAT team showed up.
It took a couple hours for them to show up, and every minute felt like a year. Dimitri had taken the two children, the older, a five-year-old Moroi, Beatrice Badica, and the younger, a two-year-old Dhampir, Alexander Schoenberg, who was Arthur's nephew, who he was raising as his grandson, and fed them, while Kate kept watch while making sure the children didn't see the bodies.
Then Kate took them and gave them a warm bath before changing them into warm clothes, which had been a miracle to give them a warm bath.
There wasn't much that they could do, other than allow the children to finally feel safe. Alexander had clung to Kate, refusing to let go of her, to the point that she had to create a baby wrap from the long and expensive scarves that had been in the main bedroom, and carried him with her as she continued to walk through the house.
Dimitri had resorted to doing the same thing as Kate, as Beatrice also refused to let go of Dimitri, so that he could continue to patrol the house, both their dusters closed and blankets tucked into the wraps so that the previously shivering children were warm and comfortable.
Both children had finally felt safe enough to fall asleep, possibly for the first time since the events that had transpired.
"They are never going to be the same." Kate whispered as she continued to stroke Alexander's dark hair, she stopped next to Dimitri, who was rubbing Beatrice's back.
"Nothing ever will, this attack is unlike any we suffered. It's been ages since we've suffered an attack this brutal." Dimitri countered, trying not to think about the fact that Kate looked adorable with Alexander asleep on her chest. How much the sight stirred something within him.
"What's going to happen to them?" Kate then asked, pursing her lips and bouncing slightly on her feet as Alexander moved on her chest, stirring in his sleep.
"Beatrice will probably be taken to the Capital, then placed with her remaining family. Alexander however, might be taken to the Academy, or sent with Beatrice and adopted by someone in the Capital." Dimitri sighed.
"You're too young to take him." He then added as he noticed Kate's silence.
"I'm a legal adult, with a stellar reputation so far. Last year of the Academy, incredibly wealthy. I could totally take him. Besides, I also lost my family young, I know how to help him better than any shrink." Kate defended almost possessively, shooting Dimitri a look to which he laughed in return at.
"Your schedule is already full as it is." Dimitri argued again, to which Kate flipped him off.
Dimitri knew that Kate adored children, he had seen it each time they were around children, in the way she acted like Viktoria's mother. And truth be told, Dimitri could see Kate being a wonderful mother one day, even if he knew that it would never be to their own children.
