To say that Lissa and Kate lived in peace for the following nearly 2 years was a slight understatement. They weren't tracked down by psi-hounds after that camping trip but they did have a few encounters with Strigoi, although by their insatiable hunger and lack of knowledge, they were recently turned Strigoi, and moreover they were Humans turned into Strigoi.

A part of the girls was happy that there had only been 4 encounters before they ran into an older and more experienced and knowledgeable Strigoi, which landed Kate in a wrist brace after she managed to kill him.

Their strange connection that had formed the night of the psi-hound attack, only grew stronger, which Kate appearing in Lissa's memories and dreams, be it willingly or not, be it close to Lissa or not.

Sometimes, Lissa would also appear in Kate's dreams and memories.

In a way it allowed the other girl to learn about the their pasts without them having to voice them, which in their states of grief and loss, was something that they were both thankful for.

Sometime during those nearly two years, the two girls had agreed to foster a kitten, who they affectionately named Oscar, a kitten that not even Mrs. Moss could complain about seeing as he actually greeted people with a small meow when they visited the apartment.

Surprisingly the nightmares that both girls were afflicted with since the losses of their families seemed to subside after the formation of their strange connection. And while Jeremy was glad about it, he confided in George that he was still worried about the co-dependency that the two girls formed with the other.

But like all good things, their peace came to an end.

It was on a Sunday, October 5th, 2013, early in the morning, before dawn even broke, that their peaceful life began to go down hill.

Kate felt Lissa's fear before she heard her screams. Her nightmare pulsed into Kate, shaking her out of her own dream, which had had been about the last birthday she had spent with her mother and twin brother.

Images, Lissa's, not Kate's, tumbled through her mind: fire and blood, the smell of smoke, the twisted metal of a car. The pictures wrapped around the brunette, suffocating her, until some rational part of her brain reminded me that this wasn't her dream.

Jolting into a sitting position, Kate forced her heavy eyes open, revealing her dark red irises, strands of long, dark brown hair sticking to her forehead, at her feet stood Oscar, the hairy tabby cat, who meowed at one of his mothers before jumping to the ground and running out of the room, no doubt heading to the kitchen to beg for food.
