The next couple of weeks, Alexis had been meeting Lucius in various locations. They would go to the bar together, get coffee together and go for walks together, all the while Demetri lingered in the background. He began getting creative with his disguises: altering his features so Lucius wouldn't recognize him.
Lucius would often kiss Alexis goodbye, but she hadn't let it get further than that. She recoiled at the thought of a Death Eater touching her, but when Lucius touched her, it felt different and that scared her.
Alexis and Demetri were walking to a nearby park, when she suddenly turned on him.
"I want to do this one alone," she announced.
"Why?"
"I work better alone. I've always had. I need to step up the game. It's been weeks and we haven't gotten very far."
"But Lex-"
"I'll be fine," Alexis reassured him. "Believe it or not, I have gotten to know him. If he was going to try something, he would have by now."
Demetri ran his fingers through his black hair. "Fine. I need to meet Draco anyway. First day at the Ministry."
"While you're at it, can you make sure he doesn't have any contact with his father?"
"I'll make sure."
They waved goodbye and Alexis wrapped her jean jacket tighter around her before continuing to the park.
She found Lucius sitting on a bench, his arm stretched over the back, watching children play.
"Hey stranger," Alexis said, sitting next to him.
"Aren't you cold, darling?" He eyed her small jacket.
"Extremely," she answered, getting closer to him for warmth.
Lucius wrapped an arm around her. "Not to worry. I was thinking of going somewhere indoors."
"Where?" Alexis asked, turning her head to look at him.
His eyes were fixated on the children. "It's a surprise. It's something I've wanted to show you for awhile now."
"Okay," Alexis said slowly.
"Come." Lucius stood, holding out his hand for her to take.
Hand-in-hand, they walked around the corner, where they would be free from Muggle eyes.
Alexis felt her heartbeat quicken and tried to take some controlled breaths in order to calm it. She felt reassured by the cold metal of her knife pressing into her skin, safely tucked inside her waistband. She suddenly wished she hadn't been so quick to send Demetri away.
Lucius held her hand tightly as he apparated. They appeared before this tall, black metal gate. Inside the gate, Alexis could see an overgrown lawn and a mansion towering over the landscape.
"Where are we?" she asked, keeping her voice steady.
Lucius didn't answer, instead he let go of her hand and pulled out his wand. Alexis felt very aware of how far her wand was; she had tucked it into her boot for safe-keeping, now feeling like she wouldn't be able to defend herself quick enough.
Lucius pointed his wand at the gate, flicked it and it opened with a loud scrapping noise.
He turned to look at Alexis, waving her forward. She walked to him and he placed his hand on her back, sending a small shiver down her spine. They walked side-by-side, until they reached the front of the house. Lucius looked up at it, a small, sad smile on his lips.
