*** Fifty-Two ***

They had advanced under cover of night. The first Winter rains had been followed by an unexpected flurry of intense snowfall, giving them the chance to arrive without our knowledge.

We were trapped between a rock and a hard place. Longhorn was a great fort, but did not have any escape routes, not that I was aware of and therefore it was fight or die. It was as easy as that and the choice of a battle-field was removed from my hands.

None of King Lancet's people had arrived. Ragghwaart had not returned with news and what I had gleaned from Moira was that they had not yet come across any of Master Craig's cavalry.

Habieb was with the Bedien. Retrained by Brutus, they were still young and unproven men that had not seen battle before. I was assured that they were good with their swords and had issued Pangi to them all to help defend themselves against the Cudrl.

The forty Elfen volunteers were set up as archers. Equipped with steel-tipped arrows, their long-bows would be able to give us more of an even battlefield. Judya was the regiment leader and Raico acted as his Captain.

I had eight Huracan Riders available. This included Samual, Greava, Habieb and I. We had the most control over our dragons and some Riders could even ask their Huracan to produce fire on command.

All together, we were ninety-four trained men, facing a horde of merciless killers.

Strongclaw glided in from his reconnaissance flight. The Raven's report indicated that the odds seemed to be improving. Dronier had not bothered to send humans to do his dirty work. He had only sent Cudrl, sure in the knowledge that they would be frightening enough to send most people scurrying back into hiding.

Only problem we had was that we were outnumbered at least five to one!

I guess one could count a pair of Riders as at least two or three men. That made the odds slightly better.

With the snowfall intensifying and the Cudrl advancing mercilessly, the idea was to try and keep the defensive line at the edge of the plain at the lowest end of the valley that faced the cliff where Longhorn was situated.

Leaving the Bedien in Brutus' hands, Habieb joined me where I was finalizing arrangements with the few volunteers that had defected from Dronier's lands. Mounted on Windshine, Connor was going to Captain them as support personnel. Reif, Drake and Marshall were at the Castle, ready to receive any injured people.

The Cudrl did not seem to be influenced by the weather and I did not want to put us at a further disadvantage if the weather should turn worse, prompting the decision for me to attack.

After mounting Moira, I gave the order for a full frontal attack.

From experience I knew that if everyone worked together, we could win this fight. I had battled these odds before, we had gained supremacy with only a handful of people. I felt sure we could do it again.

Asking Moira to fly over the troops, I saw that the Bedien horses were restless. When the Huracan Riders joined us to head out to the Cudrl, the wind turned, their stench overwhelming us, even in the air.

The order for attack was given. Elfen bows were strung and arrows released, felling some of the black globs underneath us.

Moira and Habieb kept rank. We even managed a good spout of fire over the enemy, but as I released some arrows into the beasts, I became aware that I was suddenly alone.
