Extract from my personal Leilakan diary:

A study on dragons.

Apparently, there are more species of Huracan than just Moira's type. She is considered a Sea or Water Huracan. The lightest and fastest of her kind.

Her sleek, lizard-like head seems delicate, hiding an incredibly strong jaw and a set of razor sharp teeth. Unlike lizards, Huracan do not have forked tongues. Her strong neck is long, joining a wide chest knotted with muscle.

Her wings extend from just before and above her fore-legs, starting out as if a leaf that was plastered there with muscles that connected from chest, back, ribs and stomach to a gristled, lightweight structure covered in leather-like skin.

Her wings, ridged with cartilage, not bone, expand over her back. She can fold them to her body if she so wishes, but mostly keep them tucked close, folded backwards in a natural droop, or extending them sideways if space allows.

Her legs are powerful tools, set wide from her body, giving her a squatting appearance. She has five fingers on her front claws and four toes at the back, webbed between the fingers and toes to allow for easy swimming when catching fish.

Her nostrils and ears can close on command. Her ears are mere holes covered with a thin layer of skin, situated just to the back of her head, underneath the bulges where her horns will grow when she is older.

Her eyes are larger than the other Huracan, the ridges above her eyes protecting them from a frontal attack. She simply drops her head and her eyes are out of harm's way. This makes it difficult for her to scan for danger in the sky, not that there are real danger, except from another Huracan or maybe one of the giant eagles.

Her normal head carriage is parallel to the ground, enabling her to have a good focus to the front and sides. I have noticed that she has a blind spot to the back of her head, but can see me clearly when I am on her back and her head and neck is held straight in natural flight.

The Huracan eye colour usually matches the scale colour, but I have noticed some Huracan with yellow or orange eyes. Their colour ranges usually blend in with the sea colours, deep greens, sea blues and indigo. But there are a few lighter coloured ones as well with more yellow or turquoise.

Moira stands as tall as two small horses if stacked on top of each other. I guess in Leilakan terminology, she would be almost 24 hands high at her withers. Or if you put it where I originate from, approximately two meters, forty centimetres. The males can reach withers heights of up to three meters, or 30 hands high.

With a prominent withers and straight enough back, a saddle fits comfortably directly behind the withers on the bony part of her spine. It is held onto her with a normal horse-girth and a three-point breast-plate that keep it from slipping back. Her back is still flexible, like a cat's, so the best riding position is directly behind the withers.

Her short back extends into a plain lizard-like tail. Thick where it leaves the body, it tapers down to a blunt end. Her tail is an extension of her limbs and is used for balance and a rudder in the air or water. She can also use it as a weapon in striking or swiping. But mostly, in rest, she uses her tail as a gentle herding tool, or to claim private territory or food. "This is mine, and this is the boundary to prove it."

Fire is a bit of a tricky thing. No-one can explain to me how it is ignited or what causes the Huracan to be able to breathe fire.

Their breath constantly smell like sulphur and when I asked Moira what she experience when actively using this defence mechanism, she told me that it was spitting, just using fire.

Fire seems to be used in anger or as a defence mechanism. Moira has to think 'fire' when there is no threat to either of us and I ask her to produce it on purpose. One would think Huracan would use their fire more often, but fire is left as a last resort.

Apart from Moira's sulphur breath, her body smells like cinnamon to me. Spicy with sometimes a hint of ginger. I love sleeping next to Moira's warm body. It is always relaxing, soothing and soft.
