*** Forty-One ***

Two days later we took our leave of Ishmay and Bernine. Ragghwaart and Samual were returning them to the Floverne Elfes.

Elfen horses had been organised for Habieb and Reif. I was going to travel with the people on horseback, making it easier to stay in direct contact with Leilaka as one tended to lose perspective when separated and on your own in the sky.

Moira and Lance were not overjoyed by this arrangement, but understood the necessity of our decision. It was not as if all horses and humans would accept Huracan. They would try and keep out of sight as far as possible, joining us in the evenings to bring us fresh meat.

It was going to be quite a luxurious journey and I was looking forward to some easy riding over the next few days.

It turned out to be a boring, uneventful journey and by the time I felt like slitting my wrists, we eventually arrived at the fields surrounding King Lancet's Castle.

Strongclaw flew eagerly ahead towards Crosshaven where he had made some friends on our last visit.

Habieb found himself in unfamiliar territory and received loads of stares from everyone we passed. Looking into the minds of these people along the road, I found them to view him with suspicion and disrespect.

Even I received some of the same suspicion. They did not know who this dark-blond youngster was. They recognised Master Craig and Captain Brair. They were overjoyed at seeing Healer Reif. Some recognised Drake as the Personal Servant of King Dameous.

I stared at Drake's back where he was riding in front of me next to Connor. I knew he had given service to the King, but did not remember from Krish's memories that he had been a Personal Servant.

Asking Windshine to walk next to his horse, I questioned Drake regarding this issue.

"When did you serve King Dameous as a Personal Servant?" I wanted to know.

Drake smiled, not even looking in my direction. "You will not have memory of me being around" he replied. "I was relieved from duty when my knee was injured in defence of the King. I never left his service, though, sticking around, working from the background, training people in order to assist the extended Royal Family."

Krish's memories showed me two elder brothers, two elder sisters and three younger sisters, making me the fifth child, the youngest son.

I was troubled, for my memories showed that Krish's mother had been pregnant at the time of their murder.

And as I rode on Windshine, Krish's body went and did something, I, as Han, was totally unprepared for . . .

In a flash I was there, in the flesh of Krish, experiencing the slaughter of my family members around me, starting with Dronier slitting my father's throat . . . disembowelling my mother, spilling the twin bodies of my unborn siblings onto the courtyard stones . . . crushing the foetuses under his boots.

I screamed as huge, stinking, sucking, gooey, wet talons grabbed me, crushing my body, whipping me around where I could see my brothers and elder sisters being strangled.

The hideous . . . Things . . . simply bashed in my younger sister's heads, yet they left me alive, forcing me to watch these atrocities before pushing me towards my Uncle, the man I had trusted all my life . . .
