*** Twenty-Two ***

Ishmay led us through the quiet woods. There were no whispers this time and I started breathing normally when we descended into the lower regions of the rift.

The footing here was still secure, with very little snow blowing in from the upper regions. We made the climb to the bottom without much effort and followed the river home to the Palace of Glyden.

Although cold, snow did not reach this deep valley and the grass grew lush and green along the riverbanks.

We were briefly challenged by two guards, who allowed us to pass as soon as they had identified us.

Ishmay led us directly to the Palace stables where we settled the horses with deep beds of straw and lots of hay before taking up our gear.

When our tasks were completed, Ishmay walked with us to the quarters we had previously been placed in. Leaving us there, the three Elfes moved on to their own homes.

We were all too exhausted to bother with finding food at this odd hour and fell into our beds, not worrying about undressing.

A deep, familiar voice brought me gently out of sleep.

Reif was in discussion with Connor at the entrance to the room. All the adults and Marshall were missing.

Habieb was still sleeping peacefully where he had fallen down earlier.

I extended my hearing to listen in on the conversation.

Reif was speaking. "You must clean him up. The Elfen council wants to see you all as soon as possible. I have arranged for the meeting to be informal in the dining hall. It should be best for the young ones not to feel threatened in any way."

"You did well, my friend" Connor replied. "It will be easier to discuss matters when all of us are together, and not being interrogated, one at a time."

"Shall I see you at breakfast then?"

"Yes, I will wake the last two to go clean up in the washroom."

"Do not forget to bring the sword and the staff."

"We will not."

Reif walked down the passage and Connor turned around, staring right at me.

From the concern on my face he knew that I had heard all of that.

"How long have you been listening?" he asked.

"Long enough" I replied.

"Are we in trouble?" I wanted to know from him, although knowing deep down what the scenario was to be.

"We will know soon enough. Wake Habieb, we need to clean up before breakfast. We stink like horses."

He did not discuss the conversation any further and I woke an un-cooperative Habieb.

"I'm still tired" he complained in Bedien.

I opened a window for Strongclaw and left the sleeping bird on my bed.

We followed Connor out into the passage and down the stairs to a room on the ground floor.

This was a bath area where Elfes were labouring over boiling vats of water, taking buckets full to the baths in cordoned off cubicles.
