*** Twenty-Six ***

The storm raged for three days, blowing snow into the valley, right down to the bottom, sprinkling everything in a powdery white softness.

Reif had confined me to my quarters and I had only Habieb as a visitor from time to time.

Not even Strongclaw was allowed to say hallo.

Meals, washing up and even ablutions had to be done right here.

Reif frequently monitored my physical condition, making sure I performed the stretching exercises I had introduced my companions to on the mountain.

For entertainment, I started push-ups and sit-ups, getting incredulous stares from the grown-ups.

In between bouts of activity, I was encouraged to keep at my work of translating Jamal's ancient book.

It took a lot of energy, draining me to the point where Reif kept my work to only three hours at any stretch.

Being cooped up like this did not do much for my temper and as the dreary days slipped into worse nights, my agitation grew out of bounds.

Dawn of the forth day saw me slipping out of the Palace, intent on being with myself for a few hours.

I had given Connor the slip when he had finally dosed off in the chair. On a silly whim, I had taken the staff with me.

On my arrival at the stables, I found a similarly irritable stallion waiting for me. Windshine did not need any convincing that we had to get out of there.

I did not bother with a saddle, simply slipping onto his back, allowing him to pick his own route out of the valley.

He took the road back towards the desert, stretching his legs in a flat-out gallop wherever he could.

We were soon climbing out of the valley and hit the full brunt of the snow as we reached the top.

Here I asked him to skirt the slope. He kept to the older trees which had given adequate protection from the snow, ploughing his way through the drifts until we came to the area I had in mind.

It was the same site I had reached after finding the staff and the sword.

As I slipped off Windshine's broad back, I wondered why I had returned to this exact spot.

Planting the staff in the snow, I sat down on a rock that was exposed by the wind.

Here I waited, with Windshine nervously stepping on one place.

The heavens started to open, the wind dissipating some of the cloud cover.

A ray of sunshine peeked through the clouds, throwing its golden glow over our area, making the whole set-up surreal in its experience.

In all of Leilaka this one, single ray of sunshine would fall on us.

Windshine's coat gleamed blue in the light. The crystal in the staff sparkled like a diamond, throwing millions of little lights all over the snow.

My attention was drawn towards the inside of the crystal.

There seemed to be movement inside of it. The more I concentrated on it, the more active the movement became.
