Chapter Thirteen: Honesty

"Myers would like to see you now!"

I explained everything to him. Piano music played. He had someone playing his piano for him. This was Myers' second office.

I was in his home.

I stood at the door wanting to leave. He had his musician play a different song. Myers wasn't in a good mood.. He loved any song that could be played "by" the piano.

He walked around his room touching old antiques and looking at his pictures in frames. Then looked up at his big clock. I looked at his pictures too and only saw photos of him when he was in The LEAGUE.. No family..

"What happened?" I already told him! "What happened to honesty?" "I am being honest with you!" I argued. "Not you Henry.."

A silence of disappointment.

Across the room I could see the musician quickly look up nervously at Myers.

"I'm not really sure what happened to Anette but Astrid was pretty pissed at it.. Do you think her sister got captured?" I was testing him. "We all make mistakes Henry, but some people have to pay for their consequences.." I didn't know what he was getting at but I hoped it didn't concern my past because I had nothing to do with this.

"And did you see her?" "Anette? No, I don't know where she went. I knocked out after the explosion! All I saw was Amari running to me! Where's Astrid anyway?"

The song ended and Myers waved his hand for the musician to leave.

He quickly packed up and left. I hope no one was pinning this all on me because I was going to directly make sure Myers knew the truth. I was the only one who could speak to him alone anyway.

I looked over at him.

"Has anyone implied this as being a rigged mission, Henry?" "No!" 'Lie better!' I thought to myself. "I'm not sure what everyone was thinking!" I said.

He sat at his piano.

"Henry? Do you know what happens to people when they lie?" "They get moved to another agency?" I was being snarky. "Henry, you are an exception! You are my prodigy.. I'd only expect you'd be honest with me.. Alice, would have wanted you to be honest."

He played on his piano. I left. And when the door closed the music stopped.

It made me so mad he mentioned her, but I left.

"What did Myers tell you?" "Nothing threatening!" "Good!" I was in the car with Jade, she was taking me home. She had honest responses for me without the sarcasm.

Myers wouldn't let anyone into his home unless it was me or if he was hosting a party for The LEAGUE. The car ride wasn't awful but it didn't have to be so awkward and silent and my anxiety made it even worse. Jade kept smoking on her cigarette but she rolled the windows down. I watched her cry to herself silently. She looked over at me then back at the road.

"I'm just trying to save you from what everyone's trying to put you through.." More tears. And now here come the waterworks!

"I'm tired.. Everyone's been lying Casper! You're a good person.. and I know you've been through enough! You're only twenty one! You've tried creating a new life for yourself but I know what it's like to not be able to run away from what you left behind.. Your past! I've known that feeling for my entire life and I knew you my whole life! And you've always looked out for others before yourself!"

When she said that, I had this memory of Alice speaking to me.. "Your soul is darkening.." If she was still here I think that's what she would still say.

"They don't know what it was like for us growing up.. They don't know what it's like to be you!"

After that I had thought of what Heelix had said to me.. That I couldn't remember? "And you stood out from everyone else.. That's why you were put first always by Myers! You shouldn't be punished for it!"

"God, you say that like he's my father! Get a fucking grip Jade and let me out the car!" I said holding on to the door handle waiting for the car to stop.

I got out of the car.

"And I'm the only one trying to protect you!" She screamed out of the car. I looked back, but she sped ahead to drive off.. leaving me there!
