Chapter 47: Loyalty

Artemis woke up in a cell with a rat on her. The fluorescent light made her feel lightheaded. She rubbed her shoulder, it was bruised and sore. Something had been injected in her to make her feel weak.

She panicked and searched on the ground for her sphere that Myers gave to her.. It was gone.

Feeling a sense of disquiet, she petted the rat on her lap.

"My dearest Artemis." She jumped. "Did you just utter something to me?" She held the rat close to her face. "A day couldn't have passed that I've been off my medication." She stroked it. "How long have I slept here?"

"Art." It was her love. "Myers?!" "Why are you trapped here?" "I came here to save you!" "So do you blame me.. for this mess you are now in?"

Artemis looked down at the rat running away from her lap.

"Will I die like this? Will they come back to kill me.. for loving you?" "No my sweet love but as I've always told you, you must break free." "Maybe you will live in my mind. I don't have much control there."

Myers knelt to her.

"You can no longer be a princess trapped in a tower beloved." She looked bewildered.

"You will die like this if you do not set yourself free."

Artemis started to fear. She pulled on the bars as her eyes watered. Myers stood there discerning.

Artemis called the rat to her. She strengthened its teeth to gnaw on the medal bars.

"You can do it my little friend!" In time the bars fell, leaving a small opening for Artemis to crawl through.

She escaped.

She searched everywhere for her sphere..

Mono rummaged through her apartment, destroying everything to find the necklace Henry gifted her.

She finally looked in her jewelry box, which was also a gift from Henry.

Alice's amulet.

"The final dark object!" Heelix shouted, opening Henry's door.

"He's gone." Cade said.

Heelix walked into Henry's room to check his safe.. He entered the code.

He screamed, flipping over the nightstand when he found nothing.

"Henry's not here. If the League never found it Henry still has it."

They looked at each other.

"I don't have it. I gave it away to Mono." "What the-" Heelix said, almost losing his temper. "Why the hell would you do that?" "It was a gift. I wanted her to know she meant just as much as Alice to me." "Mono is NOT Alice!" Cade moved Heelix away from Henry. "Do you know where she is now Henry?" Heelix asked calmly. "She wanted to leave." "She's probably with Myers by now." Cade thought. "She's buying her freedom." Heelix said leaving.

"Cade?" Henry stopped Cade. "What am I gonna do?" Cade thought of her. "Find someone that doesn't remind you of Alice."

Artemis stormed through The League's lobby barefoot, her knees scraped and swollen, with the angriest expression.

Everyone looked at her and backed up to stay out her way.

His assistant didn't even stop her, but her mouth fell agape. She opened Myers' office smiling. "Myers?" She cried. He wasn't there. She read the letter he left on his desk. It was the love letter he mailed her. She read the back as always.
