Warnings: Angst! Language! Fluff!
In the days following the mission in the Alps Fury had agreed to give the team, and most importantly you, some time off.
You were all staying in a townhouse in a small town in northern Italy. It was one of the nicer safe houses you'd stayed in. Something Steve was grateful for because it gave you somewhere to completely relax.
Steve did everything he could to make sure that you were okay. Especially since you had completely closed yourself off from him and the team. Your appetite was barely there, you spent more of your time pushing your food around your plate than eating it. Steve was worried that you'd end up making yourself sick.
Nat and Sam told him that he was doing everything he could. This was something you had to deal with in your own time and all he could do was support you. He couldn't help but feel helpless.
You were sat wrapped up in a blanket in the bay window of your bedroom staring down at the street below. Watching as the locals went about their day without a care in the world.
Your eyes fell on a young couple on the streets. You watched them laugh as they held and swung their hands. At one point the guy stopped walking while the girl carried on. The guy then pulled the girl back to him wrapping his arms around her kissing her forehead making her laugh. They brush noses before kissing each other with wide smiles on their faces.
Before you realise you had to look away, tears fall down your cheeks as the overwhelming sense of guilt overcame you. Steve had been perfectly caring not only since the mission but since he rescued you from the raft. Yet all you'd done was pull away from him time and time again.
You sniffled wiping away your tears when you spotted Steve standing in the doorway. You could see how sad he looked as he watched you making you feel even more guilty. You had to advert your gaze looking down at your lap.
Steve doesn't say anything, he just walked over and sits down by your feet putting a hand on your knee.
"I'm sorry" you whisper wiping away your tears.
"What are you apologising for, you have absolutely nothing to apologise for," Steve said shaking his head.
"I do, you keep being so sweet making sure I'm okay and all I'm doing is pushing you away and making everything difficult" you sigh looking away as you wiped away your tears with shaky hands.
"No you're not, everything you're doing is completely normal after everything you went through, especially after last week" Steve reassures rubbing the side of your leg.
"I just hate feeling this way, I thought it was all over that I could move on, I was so happy in Asgard then I'm suddenly back at square one because he got the better of me and fuck... I don't know what would have happened if you hadn't arrived when you did" you sniffle as more tears fall.
"You are not back at square one again, far from it, this is just a bump in the road, yes it's a nasty one but it won't be forever," Steve says reaching out to take your hand.
"Because you are so strong doll, no matter what that little voice inside your head is saying, because you are here right now, you survived it and came out stronger. You were the one who spotted him reaching for the gun, if you hadn't then we don't know what could have happened, even when you felt like you were at your weakest you were fighting to keep everyone safe because you are that strong" Steve tells you squeezing your hand.
"And it is all over now, that piece of scum is rotting in a Wakandan prison for the rest of his life, while you get to live your life however you want, you get and deserve to be happy" he continues.
