Chapter 86: The Time Heist

Steve was awake much earlier than he needed to be, he knew he should try and get more sleep so he was more rested but he had far too much anxious energy. Climbing out of bed he started getting ready for the day, ignoring the huff of annoyance he got from Scout who had been woken up by Steve.

Once he was showered and dressed in his grey henley he crept into JJ's room. The 6-year-old was still fast asleep, as silently as he could Steve sat on the edge of his bed, his hand running over his light blond locks smiling gently when JJ murmured in his sleep.

"I'll see you soon bean" Steve whispered leaning down to kiss the top of JJ's head.

Once he was downstairs he fill Scout's bowl of food ready for whenever the pup decided to come downstairs, made himself some breakfast and prepared JJ's rucksack and lunchbox for school. He was just sipping on a cup of coffee when Roberta walked in through the back door looking tired.

"there's a pot of coffee ready for you," Steve tells her nodding to the pot.

"Thanks, I don't get how you can be so awake this early, the sun hasn't even risen" She mutters as she pours herself a cup of coffee.

Steve shrugs "just raring to go I guess" he offers, a small smile appearing on Roberta's face.

"today's the day... the time heist" she sighs eyebrows raised as she takes a large gulp of her coffee.

"yup" Steve nods.

"well I wish you luck, just don't go placing any bets on sports teams" Roberta smirks making Steve laugh.

"That's not how time travel works" he chuckles.

"eh it was worth a shot" she shrugs "is JJ still asleep?"

"yeah he won't be up for another hour or so, his lunchbox is all ready to go so he'll just need his breakfast and someone to make sure he puts his shirt on the right way around," Steve says "thanks for agreeing to take him to school again and getting up so early, Tony wants to try and get this all done in a day so we thought starting the mission in the early morning would give enough time to finish the gauntlet and snap our fingers by the end of the day" he explains.

"no it's okay I get it, and I love spending time with JJ, he's a good kid" Roberta smiles "and the sooner he gets his mom back the better"

"thanks Roberta" Steve smiles "I owe you so much," he says shaking his head.

"no you don't," Roberta tells him "the world owes you, and I'm just repaying the favour" she shrugs with a smile.

"I'm still gonna thank you anyway" Steve smirks making Roberta laugh.

"you wouldn't be you if you didn't, now go on, I know you're dying to get going" Roberta smiles as she ushers him to the door.

"thank you, I'll see you later, I'll text when I'm on my way back so you have a bit of a heads up" Steve smiles as he opens the front door.

"thank you, now go," Roberta says practically shoving him out the door.

When Steve got to the compound the sun was only just beginning to rise. Everyone had already gathered in the conference room, the air in the room palpable. Everyone was anxious to get going but also nervous, the weight of what this mission meant weighing heavy on their shoulders.

"right, here's everyone's devices," Tony says as he passes out the supply of nanotech quantum realm suits "you wear them kinda like a watch, but instead of telling the time, it's to navigate time"
