Warnings: Fluff! Light Angst!
4 weeks. 4 weeks was all it took for the news cycles to move on from the initial shock of the snap to people debating whether it was the right thing to do. Steve knew this was going to happen, Tony warned him about it and he'd been preparing himself for it. Steve had planned to ban himself from watching the news but it was practically impossible.
So here he was sitting on the couch, elbows resting on his knees, flipping the TV remote over in his hand as he watched the news with intensity. They were currently showing a piece where they'd gone out to ask the general public what they thought. There were the typical answers of people being happy and grateful that their loved ones had returned, some were mad to find their houses had been sold while they were gone. There was even someone who outright said it was better during the snap.
Steve at that point had had enough and was about to turn off the TV when one comment made him pause "Yeah I'm grateful and all that but you can't deny the chaos the world is in now trying to sort it all out and the Avengers have all disappeared, I don't see them out here trying to help, I mean where's Cap? We need him" the woman said as she shook her head.
"you know you shouldn't be watching that," you scold gently, walking over to stand behind the couch, your hands resting on his shoulders.
"I know" Steve sighs leaning back, your hands sliding down to his chest as you wrapped your arms around his shoulder, he tilts his head back so he could look up at you "It's just hard sometimes"
"I know, everyone has opinions but just remember it doesn't make it true," you say leaning down to kiss his forehead, you then reach out to take the remote from his hands and turn off the TV.
"you're right" Steve sighs lifting his head as you walked around the back of the couch to sit down beside him "I mean that woman was wrong, there's lots of us Avengers out there trying to help, they can't be everywhere... maybe I should be out there trying to help"
"Steve it's okay to be taking some time to rest, there's so much help and initiatives that are being launched by the Avengers that are helping people," you tell him as you tuck yourself into his side, hand resting on his chest, over his heart "they just can't see it because it isn't a physical symbol"
Steve hums nodding his head "True... I guess people aren't ready for a world without Captain America but it's out of my hands, the shield is gone" Steve sighs.
"what would you do if Thanos hadn't destroyed it? would you still be serving?" you ask him.
"god no" Steve states shaking his head, his hand moving to cover yours "My time is done, all I want is to be here with you and JJ and just be a civilian"
A smile tugs at your lips as you lean in to kiss his cheek "Me too"
Steve smiles turning his head to look at you, cupping your cheek and guiding your lips to his for a slow but sweet kiss.
"I'd probably pass the shield on to someone else, Captain America doesn't have to be me... just a good person" Steve sighs his hand resting over yours once more, his thumb drawing circles on the back of your hand.
"who would you pick? Bucky?" you ask.
Steve shakes his head "Bucky is a perfect soldier, even before everything... but I don't think he'd be comfortable taking it on, at least not yet..." Steve explains before glancing over at a photo on the wall that was taken Christmas day in Wakanda "But Sam would be perfect, he's a good man"
"Would he want that responsibility?" you wonder out loud.
"Maybe not... but I hope so" Steve sighs.
A knock on the front door disrupts your conversation, the both of you glancing over in the direction of the door "I'll go" you whisper kissing Steve quickly before climbing off the couch.
