Chapter 71: A Big Day

You couldn't believe how quickly time was going. JJ was turning one tomorrow, it felt like you blinked and your tiny baby was all grown up. You hated it, you wanted him to stay your little baby forever.

You were standing in the kitchen making JJ's birthday cake for his little party tomorrow. You were just wiping down the side after putting the cake in the oven when Steve walked in, holding JJ's hands above his head as he toddled in.

"Whoa slow down bean" Steve laughed as JJ stumbled over his feet.

"Oh look at you go!" You smile bending down to his level.

JJ squeals and babbles in excitement when he sees you, holding out one hand and making a grabbing motion.

"Wanna walk to mama?" Steve asks still holding onto JJ's hand.

JJ looks up over at Steve before looking back over at you. Steve carefully lets go of JJ's hands, keeping them close enough to grab him if needed. You hold out your arms, gently encouraging him to walk. JJ looks between you and Steve once more before plopping himself down. You and Steve chuckle at his attempts.

"Nearly there, c'mon bean," you say scooping him up and resting him on your hip.

"I thought you'd be running rings around us by now" Steve chuckles tickling JJ's side, who screams in delight.

"Maybe it's a blessing in disguise that he can't walk yet, it's hard enough keeping up with his crawling" you point out laughing.

"Maybe, are you just saving your energy for the sprint ay?" Steve asks ticking JJ again making him squeal.

"No!" He shouts flapping his cubby little arm at Steve.

Your eyes widen looking over at Steve who was equally shocked and surprised. Smiles grow on your faces when your realised JJ had just said his first word.

"What did you just say bean?" Steve asks, the both of you hoping it wasn't a fluke.

"No!" JJ repeats a wide smile on his face.

"Oh aren't you a clever boy!" You smile hugging him tightly.

JJ babbles excitedly repeating the word 'no' clearly enjoying all the extra attention he was getting. Steve laughs kissing JJ on the head and running his hand over his light blond hair.

"He gets that from you" Steve smiles looking over at you, making you furrow your brows in confusion.

"The stubbornness" Steve smirks making you gasp.

"Steve! You are just as stubborn as me" you laugh shaking your head at him.

"So you're not denying it then?" Steve smirks.

Before you get the chance JJ answers for you "no" he giggles making Steve howl with laughter, clutching his chest.

"Oi no ganging up on mama, I'm making your cake remember," you say playfully scolding JJ.

"We're not are we JJ?" Steve smirks, laughing when you pout.

"Sorry princess" Steve chuckles kissing your forehead.

You smile as JJ rested his head on your shoulders, nuzzling his face into your neck. The excitement of his first word clearly tiring him out. You rub his back gently shifting him to a more comfortable position.

"Looks like it's time for someone's afternoon nap" Steve smiles when he sees JJ yawn.

You hum in agreement as you gently rock JJ, lulling him to sleep. You kiss the top of his head gently as he slowly falls asleep.
