GAP 2: ROAD TO FOREVER

CHAPTER 20 : DINNER DATE

Everyone was rather curious when they came. They knew something was up and were waiting for us to open up the topic.

M: there's something I want to say but I think it's better if we wait until dinner is over. It's bad to let food go cold especially if its sushi 😋 let's dig in!

Jim: what's wrong with u Mon? Why are u ruining the mood by telling us there's a surprise and then not saying what it is?
Tee: ur the one ruining the mood! Just shut up and eat. Mon said she'll say it after we eat so we better eat fast!
Mom: what's this about Mon?

The mood became sullen fast. Everyone was looking at me expecting me to brighten up the mood. I don't know though if my news is good or bad or how they'll take it so I prefer to say it after dinner.

M: It's nothing bad mom. I think hahaha (that was a very awkward laugh by the way; which didn't help the mood at all)
M: Mon's hungry! Let's eat!

(I proceeded with serving Khun Sam with her favorite sushi and took a bite at another, making sure they were aware that I wanted to eat first. They looked at each other and served themselves as well. I left them with no choice but to wait. In the meantime let's think about how to say it.

I'm going to Harvard? Would that work?
How about surprise i'm leaving soon? Ughhh that's a bad idea. Grrr this sushi is not helping me. Bad sushi!)

When everybody was done eating, Sam squeezed my hands telling me it's time.
I love having khun Sam with me. Just her being there gave me the courage. I knew I had gone through the worst already and so the next announcements were not going to be a major issue.

M: uh-hmm (I awkwardly coughed to get their attention)

M: so uhhh i've got some news
(I can feel everyone staring holes at me because they know i'm stalling)
Jim: just get it over with Mon! We've been waiting for forever!
If u delay it even more I feel like I would seriously jump you!

(Kate then smacked her and told her to behave. Just about time because I can feel Sam's mood dropping dangerously low.
Sam has always been really sensitive when it comes to me so Jim's comments were definitely getting to her. Plus I think she misunderstood the word "jump" lol
I better finish this fast before she snaps at Jim)

M: I got into Harvard (i said as fast as humanly possible)
Mom: what?
M: I got into Harvard? Ha-ha?

Jim: that's good news Mon! Why did you make us think the news was bad?

(Tee elbowed jim and told her to shut up. Probably because she didn't notice that she was the only one reacting.

I can hear the sound of pins dropping. any minute now flies would come into their mouths. hahaha this is bad! I was finding ways to amuse myself coz I don't know what else to say.
I desperately needed Sam to step in and help me but that would be too cruel.
I can't ask that of her.
So i strengthened my courage and started speaking again)

M: uhmmm... I realized that I have done nothing with my life and wanted to change.
I took a chance and I just happened to get in. Yeaay right? Lucky me! Hihi

Mom: I'm happy for you Mon! Congratulations! I've always been proud of you!
M: thanks Mom! I won't be gone long. I'll be back before u know it.
Dad: when are u leaving?
M: in 2 weeks time
Jim: then why did u just tell us now?
(She was smacked by Kate again followed by a glare. Jim then just said sorry and sat back down)
Mom: how long will you be gone?
M: I plan to come back as soon as I can but maybe 5 years? I need to get my masters and then a PhD too.

Sam suddenly stood up and that surprised everybody.
Sam is obviously in a very bad mood and she had no intentions to hide it. Her smile right now could freeze the desert.

I held Sam's hand to calm her down. I was begging her to calm down.

M: Please Sam
(Sam glared at me. A glare full of emotion. It was painful to see)
S: you never said it would take 5 years Mon
(I stood up and cupped her cheeks forcing her to look at me)
M: Sam... Look at me...please look at me... Please
(When she finally did, her eyes were no longer showing anger but of hurt and sorrow)
It'll be alright! We're alright! I promise I'll come back! Wait for me! Please trust me! I'll come back to you! Just give me time

(These were the same words I have been saying to Sam over and over this past few days. I'm trying it with the hope that she would understand and believe it. That's all I can do for Sam)

Sam still couldn't force her emotions down so she shook my hand away and walked out.
Leaving me here with all the awkwardness that followed.

I couldn't follow Sam. I have a lot to explain to my parents and they deserve to not have their worries prolonged.

M: We're ok. We'll deal with it later. Don't worry
Mom: Mon didn't u tell Sam?
M: she found out before I could tell her
Mom: u should've told her the moment you had formed your plans Mon. She's your partner. She should be the first to know of your plans
M: she would've stopped me
Mom: what you've done only made it worse.
M: I know
