Rex was exhausted. It was supposed to be another normal check-in at Rishi, instead it was a Separatist infiltration where he almost died a few times. He also lost countless other clones and the whole Rishi Outpost. It was not a very good start to the day.
The two shinies that just joined the 501st, Fives and Echo, had just left the hangar so it meant that Rex was left to do more paperwork. He knew it'd be worth it, seeing their commitment on the frontlines, but it was still quite annoying to go through more work to make them ARC Troopers.
He walked past a frigate he didn't remember being there before, but pushed the thought from his mind. He recalled a medical delivery was scheduled for the day so it was nothing he had to worry about. His commlink buzzed from an incoming call. It was Skywalker. Wasn't he just here?
Deciding to decline the call, Rex went to the mess hall to grab a bite to eat. He stood in line, awaiting his food when he ran into Jesse ahead of him in the line. "How has it been up here, Jesse?"
"Oh, the usual," Jesse said through a grin. "Totally bored out of our minds, counting the minutes till our next mission."
Rex chuckled, shaking his head. For once he wasn't anticipating the next mission. With all the war going on, he needed a minute to himself. "Can't say I've been bored."
"I hear it's about to get interesting," Jesse said as the droid served them a plate of food. "The Senator's daughter is here."
Rex groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. He completely forgot about her. "I had hoped the Council wouldn't have gone through with it."
"Welp, Kix said he met her," Jesse stated, sitting at the table. Rex sat beside him, remembering the new 501st medic. Jesse leaned in, shielding his mouth to say, "Has no hands on experience with any of it—flying, medicine, battle—heard she had a rocky landing coming in, too."
Rex sighed, stirring the butter in his mashed potatoes. "Does the whole legion know this by now?"
Jesse reddened. "Well—"
Rex shook his head at him. "Poor girl won't be able to make a good first impression with all this gossip nonsense," Rex said, scooping some peas into his mouth. "You all have to stop. Let people tell their own stories."
Jesse nodded. "Yes, sir."
After dinner, Rex made his way to the barracks, looking forward to his head hitting the pillow. His head was in the datapad in hand as his comm started ringing again. Once again, it was Anakin. "Can't I have just a second to myself?" he asked aloud, letting the call ring out so his general could leave a message.
