Joseta stared at the hologram, leaning on her hand as she smiled at Rex. He had called her at least once a week since he left and she dreadfully missed him. He was making some joke about how Anakin liked to jump off walls, though Joseta's heart seized when she saw the pain hidden in his eyes. She knew he hadn't recovered from Echo's death back from the Citadel mission over a month and a half ago. She didn't blame him. She still wasn't over her father's death. And that was a few years ago now.
"So, Jos," Rex said, clearing his throat as he leaned closer to the comm. "How's leave?"
"So far, so good," Joseta said, looking around her old room on Corellia. It had basically stayed the same since she left—a haggard mess. But she was too tired to clean it after a full day's work at her brother's farm. And from her late night excursions trying to find a cure to counterbalance the rapid-aging hormone.
The door of her room flew open and in came her nephew, Alann. The eight-almost-nine-year-old sprinted over, pulling at her rolling chair. "Josie, you said you'd play Jakku Hold'Em with me!"
Rex laughed over the comm. Joseta's face heated up as she turned to him. "This is my nephew, Alann. Kallo's son."
"Good to meet you, sir," Rex said, nodding to the boy.
Joseta ruffled Alann's dark hair, gesturing to the clone captain on the call. "This is Rex, my—" My Rex? Partner? Man?
"Your boyfriend, I know," Alann stated smugly, puffing out his chest. "You talk about him all the time."
If Joseta's face turned any hotter, she could charge a solar panel.
Rex cleared his throat. "You said your brother was about to be a dad again?"
"Oh, yeah, Sella is nearing her final weeks." Which was a good thing. Sella and Kallo had been having trouble getting pregnant the past few years since Alann was born.
"Is Kallo on leave?" Rex asked, picking at something off camera.
"Yeah, he has been enjoying being back on the farm," Joseta said, pursing her lips, though she covered Alann's ears, lowering her voice. "Not enjoying Gma Maiza, though."
"Mother-in-law?" Rex asked, raising a brow.
She nodded, removing her hands off of Alann's ears. "Now, Alann, go. I'll play with you soon."
Alann ran off, letting Joseta turn her attention to Rex. Her boyfriend, basically. "I miss you."
Rex smiled sadly. "I miss you, too."
Her comm beeped, signalling that someone was wanting to call her. It was Rylann. Her eyes met Rex's gaze. They had been calling for half an hour already, but she knew it wasn't really a regular time for Rylann to call so it had to be important.
