Rex paced outside the tower in the airbase, his mind reeling. He and Tup were doing a routine maintenance check, but his mind was on Joseta. He couldn't wrap his mind around how she was up there in a full-out space battle disguised as an enemy ship. What if she got caught in the cross-fire? What if one of their own Republic fighters hit her down? What if she failed and didn't make it back? The idea of her not coming back sent a pain through his heart.

An explosion lit up the sky through the clouds. He froze in his steps, heart racing in his chest. It looked like the mission was successful.

"They did it," Tup muttered as clouds parted when the ships started returning. He counted three. Three? There were four that left. He ran towards the landing strip where they were headed, his pulse beating through his skull. Please don't be Joseta, he thought, suddenly feeling sick to the stomach. He didn't want any one of them to be gone, but the missing ship told otherwise. Maybe they were looping around? Stopping by the Capital? But the sinking feeling in his gut told him otherwise.

As the pilots exited the ships, Rex took them in. Fives ... Jesse ... Joseta! But his heart pounded. Did Hardcase make it out?

"Where is Hardcase?" Tup asked before Rex could.

Fives shook his head, pulling Tup aside. Rex walked up to Joseta and Jesse, but Jesse slunk away, leaving them alone. Rex's throat closed up. What was he going to say to her?

"I'm sorry I ran off and didn't tell you," Joseta said, licking her lips. He examined her face, noting the tear-streaks on her cheeks. "I didn't think about how it would make you feel, besides me wanting to make you mad." She looked down, rubbing her arm. "Which is childish."

He stepped closer, running his hands up and down her arms to comfort her. "All forgiven," he whispered. "And I'm sorry for trying to control you."

She nodded, leaning into his chest, letting him wrap his arms around her. He sighed, taking the moment in. But he felt a sudden urgency to tell her what had been on his mind for ages.

"Joseta," he said, pulling her towards one of the ships so they'd have at least a bit of privacy. Her brows were furrowed together, but she followed willingly. He turned to her, fishing for the ring in his pocket before gulping back the anxiety that rose in his throat.

"Rex, are you alright?" she asked, rubbing her hands together.

"I don't think I'll ever be," he said, clenching his jaw as he ran a hand over his buzzed hair. "Not when my heart beats for you. I love you, Joseta."

She blinked, face turning red. "I love you, too, Rex."

He let out a shaky breath, opening his hand to show her the ring. "I've been meaning to give you this, but I haven't had the guts, really. I also don't know what I'm doing," he said, lowering himself to one knee. He offered his hand which she took silently. "Joseta Pro'oz, when I saw three ships come back instead of four, my heart nearly shattered." He licked his lips, meeting her gaze. Tears brimmed her brown eyes. "Your laugh, your smile, your intelligence, your beauty—everything about you is something I look forward to, something I seek out, every day. Would you please accept this ring and forge a life with me as a team after the war is over?" The next words caught on his lips as the feeling of tears pricked in his eyes. "Will you be my wife?"
