She had been asking me about writing this scene between Cut and Rex and even though it was canonically supposed to happen earlier in the timeline (they are Phase I in the episode series and Phase II has already started in my book), I thought this needed to happen. It is crucial that Rex thinks about the future for the sake of Joseta and himself.

A blaster shot rang through the air. Heat and pain seared into his chest. He couldn't die. Not yet. Joseta, Rex thought before he hit the ground, knocking the wind from his chest. All went dark.
Rex jolted up, groaning as the burning in his chest grew. Something was on his chest. His hand brushed against the bacta pack on his chest. It wasn't a dream. Saleucami. It was all coming back to him.
"What ... what happened?" Rex asked, rubbing his head. Everything hurt.
"Commando droids took a potshot," Hardcase said, knocking his head for dramatic effect. "That would have gone straight through your heart had it been two inches to the left."
Rex tried to move his left arm, shivers running up his spine when it wasn't responding correctly. A twitch was all he could manage. "I can't move my arm," he said, fear rushing through him. If he didn't get better, they'd decommission him—
Kix stepped forward, poking at Rex's back. "You have some nerve damage."
"Understood," Rex said, forcing his heart to relax in his chest. What am I going to tell Joseta? Rex examined the room. He was in a barn. Stalls were around him and weird elephant-horses were within them, chomping on hay. "Now patch me up, and let's get on with it."
"Sir, you're in no condition," Kix replied, packing up his medkit. "It will heal, but it will take time."
"We're getting underway, Kix," Rex said, glowering at the medic. "That's an order."
Kix's eyes widened. He hesitated as if he was nervous. Well, he oughta be. "Sir, as the team medic, when it comes to the health of the mean, including you, I outrank everyone." Kix cleared his throat. "So, I respectfully order you, sire, to get some—"
"Excuse me," a feminine voice called from the door. It was a magenta twi'lek with darker designs on her lekku. She held a plate of fruit in her hands, lifting it for effect. "If there's not enough ..."
