Having an arm in a sling is no way to live, Rex thought as bitterness seeped into his very core. He rolled his shoulder, the snug fabric of the sling biting into his skin through his blacks. This was not fun. At all.

Because he was out of action for a few rotations longer, he had time to catch up on the more menial things, like paperwork, and cleaning his room, but his mind was elsewhere.

His eyes flitted over to Joseta who was with him in his office, sorting through papers that had gotten stacked far too high. Her nose was scrunched as she was tirelessly flipping through the documents in her grip.

"Why don't they just stick to one medium or the other?" Joseta asked, grabbing the stack of papers to hit the edges on the surface of the desk, straightening it the best she could. "Half of your stuff is sent on paper and the other half are sent via email." She looked up at him, her dark eyes boring into his. "Do we have ancient clones down in Hangar 4 still sending via carrier pigeon?"

Rex chuckled, shaking his head as he slid the datapad onto the desk the best he could with one hand. "Maybe so." He frowned, looking at the time. "It's nearing the last shift of lunch. Do you need to go?"

Joseta looked at the datapad's flashing time. She shrugged. "Are you going?"

"I am not very hungry and still have a lot of work to do."

Joseta frowned, raising a brow at him. "Rex, sometimes stepping away from work for a break makes it easier to come back to and get it done." She set aside the papers. "Plus, your body needs healing and it needs food to heal. Do you want to go back to the meds you were on before?"

Rex blushed, remembering full well the things he let slip on medication. "No, thanks," he said, clearing his throat. He paused at her sudden deflation at her glancing at the door. "I just think you're wanting me to go with you."

Joseta's head snapped back towards him, eyes narrowing. "Maybe so," she said, wiping some dust off of the desk's surface. "Is there anything wrong with me wanting to spend time with my friend?" Her fingers froze only to start tapping the metal surface. "I haven't seen you for eight months and I know it hurt that I had to cut contact, but it wasn't my decision. Good soldiers follow orders, right?"

"You of all people know that isn't necessarily true," Rex countered, looking down at his datapad to watch notifications pop up.

"But you have to understand," Joseta said, clenching her jaw.

"Yes, I do," he said, averting his eyes as he tried to pick the tablet off of the desk with his one good hand. But it wasn't working. "Kriffing sling..."

"Here, lemme help," she said, standing on her feet to help lift the tablet. Her fingers brushed over his hand during the exchange, causing his heart to pound in his chest. He took the tablet from her grasp, burying himself in the contents to divert his thoughts away from the girl in front of him. He wouldn't let his heart be so easily swayed. Not when she'd just leave again.
