Rex walked through the brush outside the walls of the Umbaran airbase, leading his squad on their perimeter sweep. He needed to get out to clear his head after the argument with Krell. To see him pull a saber out on Joseta was nerve-wracking. He had done so much to protect Joseta and to have it all almost be a waste—it scared him. He cared about Josie. He loved her and didn't want her to get hurt. And her riling up a crazy Jedi general was doing the opposite.
"I want a full perimeter sweep," Rex told his scouts. "Be on high alert." Hearing footsteps behind him, Rex turned to see a trio who should be in bed. Fives was leading Jesse and Hardcase towards him. "Fives, what are you doing out here? You should be in the barracks."
"I found my pilots," Fives said, nodding. "We're going after that supply ship."
Rex removed his helmet, clenching his jaw. "Are you out of your mind?" he asked. "It's a suicide mission, not to mention against orders." What would Krell do now that others were disobeying his orders? It couldn't be worse than what happened to Joseta.
"It's the right thing to do," Fives said, shaking his head.
Jesse stepped forward. "Sir, we have to try."
Rex looked down, licking his lips. "It sounds like you intend to go through with it."
"If you're going to try to stop us, we need to know," Fives said.
With a sigh, Rex looked into Fives' visor. "I can't help you when you get caught."
Fives nodded. "I understand, sir."
Rex watched the three leave, praying to the Maker that they'd make it out okay. He couldn't imagine losing more brothers, especially ones like Fives, Jesse, and Hardcase. His mind drifted to Joseta who was no doubt resting in the med bay. How was she doing after the near-brawl with Krell? He was still shaken from it. His fingers drifted towards his pocket where the ring was he had planned to give her earlier. They had started bickering, so there hadn't been a good time to produce it. He really didn't know how to propose. It really wasn't a part of his training.
Shaking his head, he finished the perimeter check in silence, thinking of anything and everything besides Joseta Pro'oz. When the scouts finished, he returned to the barracks, setting his helmet in his bed. He sat there for a minute, before deciding to start doing paperwork for the previous missions.
Pulling out his datapad, he looked at his organized interface with a smile. Joseta must have went through it again and updated her organizing processes. His thoughts drifted to her. Maybe now he could go and ask her. He felt his pocket, making sure the ring was still there. Letting out a sigh of relief when he felt the familiar indentation, he stood up, making his way out of the barracks.
"Look, sir!" a voice called out behind him. He watched a brother point across the base. He spun on his feet seeing the Umbaran starfighters lift off. A grin made its way to his face. They really did it. But he counted ship, seeing four lift off. Who was the fourth pilot?
