21 BBY, Month 09
Joseta hugged her knees to her chest, watching the blue lights of hyperspace reflect off of the rubber ducky that sat on the dashboard, its wide-eyes staring up at her. The memory associated with the bath toy was at least a light moment in the dark time on the ship, regardless of how short her time there was. Her mind throbbed at the thought of that pressure probing in her mind. The prickling feeling and cold sweats threatened to bite back at her even now, when she was safe.
Her breathing quickened as she closed her eyes in hopes to relieve the feeling. She would be okay. She was safe now. But she still felt the hand clamped over her heart and mind, crushing it slowly, demanding her to give in. The threats rang in her ears. Your friends are dead. You weren't able to save them. It's too late.
Joseta let out a shaky breath, hating that tears were beginning to prick at her eyes. She had done well in not giving away information, except for the small fact that the zabrak knew. He knew about Rex. She had passed out and when she awoke all he talked about was how she had cried out for help to Rex. Rex can't save you. They abandoned you. He has left you for dead.
"It's not true," Joseta whispered, repeating the words she had told him. Tears rolled down her cheek as she buried her chin into her knees.
"What's not true?"
Her heart raced in her chest as she flinched in fear. It was just Rex. She had taken first watch, but he didn't want to sleep, instead prepping his armor and gear for the next mission. She'd almost forgotten he was here since he was so quiet.
Letting out a breath, she slid her legs off of the chair, turning it to face him. "Nothing." She didn't want to bother him. He'd know she called out for him. That was too embarrassing to share.
"Josie," he whispered, sitting in the chair beside her, twisting it to face her. "You can tell me."
Joseta didn't know if it was the soft gaze, gentle tone, or the tender man before her that melted her will, but she obliged, letting out a breath. "I—the zabrak said that when I passed out I called for your name." She clenched her jaw, averting her eyes as she held one arm over her stomach, the other resting on the armrest. "He said you can't save me because you—" Her voice hitched, lip curling as tears threatened to spill. "He said you abandoned me and left me for dead."
Rex grasped her hand in his, snapping her attention back to him. He met her eyes in all earnestness, his throat bobbing. "I would never abandon you."
"I—I abandoned you so why wouldn't you?" Joseta said, looking away.
"Joseta, you never abandoned me," he said, leaning forward, grasping her hand in both of his. The warmth from his hand spread up to her arm and she couldn't look away any longer. He knelt down before her, his eyes meeting hers with an intensity she'd never seen before. "Don't believe that liar's words. You are worth saving." Her throat clenched. He stroked his thumb across her hand. "None of this is your fault."
