Josetasatatthetable, looking into the visor of Rex's helmet in front of her. It'd been a month since the order was made. A month since she'd lost everything close to her. She looked out the window at the stormy sky above the restless waves. The ocean was like a mirror to how she felt. She was getting hit wave after wave. The war was like a tide that was inevitably coming. Joseta wouldn't just stand and let it drown her. Like her dad always did, he'd stand sideways, cutting through the wave with his hands. She needed to do that.
But she couldn't. So many unread messages from Hunter, Ahsoka, Kenobi ... she couldn't do it. She couldn't face the war anymore. Especially when she'd be forced to face clones. Her brothers in arms. And Rex.
Joseta fingered her ring, twisting it around over and over. She'd been doing that a lot lately. So much was up in the air. Her mother was arrested. The Chancellor became Emperor. Wynn was hunting down Jedi. The Jedi were mostly gone. Maul and Death Watch were doing goodness knows what with Kenobi's sisters. So much.
She buried her head in her hands, looking into the visor of Rex's helmet. Maybe one day she'd do something. But her sister-in-law needed her right now. Raising two children without Kallo was not ideal.
Thunder shook the windows of the cabin on the beach. Joseta's new niece, Pressell, cried out into the night. Letting out a shaky breath, Joseta rose from her chair, running her fingers over Rex's helmet as she passed. She reached the crib, hushing Pressell as she neared. Picking the baby up, she held her close to her chest.
She prayed the world would be better for Alann and Pressell. Maybe one day, she'd do something to make it so. But not now. Her heart broke too much.
