"ED!" James yelled as he woke up from another nightmare, ever since his head injury, he would wake up screaming and would throw a hand on his head in fright.
So, as James screamed for the third time in two days, Ed Shot his eyes open and stumbled of one of the two chairs they'd left for us to sleep, over two James to comfort him.
"lad, its alright, your okay, nothing happened son" Ed said in one long sentence as he picked the crying toddler and ruffled his hair gently under his calloused fingers. I had barely opened my eyes, when a toddler climbed onto the layed back recliner which was my bed.
"mumma" he whispered, putting his bandaged forehead on mine, staring intensely into my blurred eyes, I had taken to being his "mum" so I didn't mind being his replacement. I wriggled my fingers on his sides and he pulled away giggling wildly.
"oww" he moaned, putting a hand to his head, laughing had given him a headache.
"morning monkey" I said, sitting up and rubbing my eyes. I looked over to Ed's chair to discover he wasn't there, or even in the room anymore. " James, where's Ed?" I asked, a frown pasted on my tired expression, it wasn't like him to leave James' side.
" I told Ed to get me shooshi" James giggled, tossing his arms in the air with excitement. I knew he meant sushi, but his way of saying it was so cute, i just had to have a silent giggle to myself.
We sat together on my chair-bed and told him a story about a duck, which just made up on the spot, but he seemed to be thoroughly enjoying it.
Ed wandered in about fifteen minutes later and James leapt off me, standing on my stomach in the process, making me cringe in pain.
"shooshi for me, shooshi for me!" he chanted as Ed lifted him onto the bed, placing a tray in front of him. Ed handed James a fork and he handed it back to Ed in disgust.
"What's up mate?" Ed asked, looking confused.
"chop sticks?" James asked questionably, reaching for the paper bag in Eds lap.
"can you use em?" Ed asked him, James nodded and grabbed a pair of chopsticks and began to lift a piece of sushi into his mouth rather professionally.
there was a lot this little person had to show. Ed stood up and walked over to me, holding his arms out for a hug. I accepted and he pulled me close, placing his chin on my forehead.
"i cant wait to get back to London" he whispered in a tired voice, neither of us had much sleep because we were up with James when he had a nightmare.
" Neither can I" i said back, releasing my grip and pulling away. He pulled me back and kissed me quickly, i felt warm, did he like me?
we trailed our attention back to James, who had demolished a whole tray of sushi in five minutes, and was smiling at us with a few pieces of rice stuck on his face.
"buddy, you ate that fast!" i said laughing at his cheeky rice-covered grin.
"do you wanna go see the other kids mate?" Ed asked him, yesterday we wandered down into the other children in the ward and James had met a little boy called Leo, who had leukemia. They had fun drawing together, their three year old scribbles covering the paper set in front of them.
" will Leo be there?" he asked.
"he might be" Ed said, and James nodded, crawling off the bed and making his way to the door.
We turned down numerous corridors before we came into the colorful hall which was the children's play area. James skipped quickly, his bandaged head turning a corner and vanishing from sight as he raced to the train table in the corner of the room. Ed and I followed as we made our way through many waves of children playing. some had broken limbs, others had bandages on their heads like James, while others had no hair and were hooked up to oxygen machines which they pulled along behind them.
"Ed!" James yelled, making a few of the mothers glance over at us, we were hoping not to give away his disguise " wheres Leo!" he added, scanning the room for his little friend.
We both searched the room for Leo, when we were confronted by a nurse, who looked to be in her early fifties. we both stood awkwardly for a moment, praying on our lives we hadn't done anything wrong.
"hello, are you James' parents?" she said, as she smiled lightly.
"caregivers" i corrected "yes" i smiled back at her.
"ahh, you see, James' friend Leo, he passed away last night" she said emotionlessly, no expression on her face.
"oh no" i said, almost crying, that boy was so sweet and happy yesterday.
"what the fuck? he was healthy yesterday!" Ed raised his voice slightly, making the nurse hush his language preference.
" shit sorry" he whispered, smacking his hand on his forehead as he cursed again.
The nurse then turned around and left, probably disgusted in Eds cursing, but who cares, its Ed. We joined James at the train table, mentally preparing ourselves to tell him about his friend.
"James" Ed started, he was already choking up.
"what dad?" James said, not taking his eyes of the magnetic train infront of him.
"your little friend Leo.." He started, but instead he nudged me, saying i had to finish.
"baby, Leos gone to heaven now, hes in the clouds now" i said quietly.
"Leo is gone?" he asked, confused.
"yeah baby, hes gone" i said, i was nearly in tears as James places his train gently on the table. he walked around to me and placed one of his tiny hands on my shoulder and bent down till his forehead was against mine.
"mummy, its okay, God took Leo away coz he was sick" he said, rubbing a small circle on my back. I never knew a three year old could make me feel better, let alone tell me that god had taken his friend because it was his time to go.
"i know buddy" i sniffed, outstretching my arms for a hug. I was met with two sets of arms as Ed wrapped his arms around both of us, encasing us in warmth.
