I kept looking in the direction of the door as I sat in the coffee shop, I had since discovered that this place was open twenty four hours. I was finishing my fourth cup of coffee, and although I was full of energy, I was emotionally exhausted. My head shot up from the book I was reading when the door swung open, revealing a figure wearing dark clothing and was soaked from the rain which had begun to fall a couple of hours ago. I watched him cautiously as he slumped up to the counter without any eye contact at all. he muttered a few words to the woman at the counter ands then reached into his pockets. I saw a glint as the light reflected on something in his pocket, I felt my heart speed up as he pulled out a pocket knife, flipping it up and down by his side. I was just about to run when the woman behind the counter handed him his coffee, he uttered a small thank you before putting his knife back in his pocket and walking out of the café. I sighed in relief as I went back to reading my book, I thought he was going to kill us all.
I checked the time, I had arrived here at 3:05pm and it was now 10:40pm. I was contemplating on whether or not I should go back and find Ed, I don't know what he will think, or what his mood is. My thoughts became a blur as everything started to come to mind all at once, My Christchurch life, My brother, my Mum, London, My regrets and my family. everything just hit me like a ton of bricks and I felt myself becoming angry. my fists hit the table hard and I slammed the book down in front of me, standing up and grabbing my purse. I walked out into the rain with tears of anger rolling down my face, disguised by the rain. it was almost midnight so the air was cold and the sky was dark, only lampposts guiding my way. As I walked I felt strange, like someone was following me. I turned around a few times and saw no one so I kept walking, breathing as steadily as I could as my hands shook.
My pace was quickening but I'd only noticed when I found myself practically jogging. I was on the main road on my way to the hospital when I saw two figures stumbling towards me from a distance. I began to feel uneasy so I walked quickly, avoiding eye contact. "hey beautiful" one of them said, I ignored the comment and kept walking at my steady pace. "how rude" one said and I felt my top being pulled back. I struggled slightly and used a release move id learned in karate classes a few years back to remove the fellows hand from my shirt, turning around and continuing on my way, leaving the two men standing with their jaws on the ground. "hello and goodbye" I yelled in a snooty way as I began running again, up towards the hospital. I was running at half speed, checking behind me every few minutes because of the constant uneasiness I had about me. I was about a two minutes away from the hospital so I quickened my pace, my legs moved faster and I turned my head to make sure no one was behind me.
Smack!
l felt the impact as my head collided with the concrete, making a loud cracking noise as it did so. I screamed out in agony and I felt the ground thud as someone dropped down beside me. I felt faint and my neck was wet. The rain was still pouring and my eyes stung as I looked up, unable to move as my head was getting heavier by the second. I saw a shadow appear over me and The moment I saw a face I knew there was hope. "Lanie" Ed said as his face leaned over mine, his hair reflecting off the street light above him. "Ed" I said, I was surprised had words to speak. "im sorry I didn't see you-" I started and I was cut off. "i know, I didn't see you either" he said and he grabbed my hand. "can you sit up?" he asked. "don't know" I said and I attempted to sit up. I succeeded but my head felt heavy and my neck was sticky. "fuck Lanie that's bad" he said as I clambered to my feet unsteadily. "what is?" I said unaware of the cut on the back of my head, as well as a huge lump. "your heads got a huge lump and a cut on it" he said and I reached my hand back to touch it. I bought my hand to the light and saw it was covered in thick blood. " shit!" I yelled and I began to walk towards the hospital entrance, pulling Ed along beside me unsteadily. I walked in and someone ran up to me worriedly. "what happened love?" a nurse asked me and she sat me in a wheelchair hurriedly. "we banged into each ther" Ed said and she gave him a dirty look. "i didn't ask you sir" she said rudely and turned back to me "explain miss" she said. " well I was running down the road away from these guys who were harassing me and we collided and I fell backwards and smacked my head" I said in one breath, taking in a large gulp of air at the end. " I see" she said as I was wheeled away to be checked over.
"Ed?" I whispered as I sat upright on a bed, while a doctor put some repair tape on the small cut on my head. "yeah love?" he asked me., looking at me worriedly. "is she okay?" I asked and he sighed, "well, yes and no" he said and I instantly felt myself become anxious and the monitor that was taking my heart rate began to beep a little more furiously than before. "calm down" he whispered to me. "im sorry" I began "whats wrong with her?" I finished, breathing steadily. "uh...well theres no easy way to put this" he began, I felt like I was a victim waiting to be shot, I was tense and anxious, my eyes burning.
