What Makes This Any Different?

Soon summer turned into fall—and Halloween rapidly approached us. Everything fell into some weird pattern.

Get up, ride to school with Karter, meet her in between classes, eat lunch–with Karter, Cher, and Davis–go to videography class with Karter, spend time with Karter after school to gather clips for our project, and lastly say goodbye to Karter before her soccer practice.

This was on a normal day.

On others, I'd have soccer games or football games with insane themes—and after-parties.

But somehow, just somehow, it all grew normal within a month's time.

Karter and I fell into our same dynamic—joking and teasing one another, but never actually passing the invisible boundary line that felt like it was constantly there.

Everything was oddly peaceful—well, whenever Violet and Calista weren't around, or even other girls who liked to get all up in Karter's face.

"Where are they at?" Cher whined, pouring us shots of tequila.

I shrugged, looking around the Halloween party that was growing even more packed by the minute.

It felt odd to be here without the literal other half of my costume.

Karter thought it would be funny if we dressed as Mr. and Mrs. Claus—her exact words were "We could bring Christmas to Montrose early this year."

I shook my head, hearing her laughs echo in my head.

"I feel stupid without Mr. Claus here," I pointed out,

Cher only laughed, "How do you think I feel?" she asked motioning to her teal Jasmine costume, "I'm missing my Aladdin."

I sighed, grabbing the shot glass that Cher previously poured, which caused her to reciprocate my actions, "To not having the other half of our costumes," I joked with a deflated tone.

Cher clinked her shot glass with mine, "Cheers," she said, matching my deflated tone. As soon as the burning liquid was down my throat and swallowed, Cher said, "Maybe after a few more shots our other halves won't matter."

I nodded quickly, "What an excellent conclusion," I said, easily earning a string of laughs from Cher's lips.

"Davis!" Cher cheered, running over to the pair that had just entered the kitchen.

I slowly blinked a few times, taking in Karter's Santa costume—she was in a white beater, red velvet pants that matched my costume with black suspenders, and shiny black Doc Martens. Her long hair was down with a Santa hat on her head and her face was completely bare.

She looked good. Maybe Karter is better than the actual Santa.

My eyes widened at my own thoughts. Yeah, I think Cher and I poured too many shots.

Davis and Cher followed behind Karter who was walking toward me.

I giggled slightly when I heard Davis say, "You guys poured up without us? The disrespect."

Karter stopped right before me as I leaned against the counter, her hazel eyes trailing my costume.

I was in a red velvet coat which was actually a very short dress. The end of the dress had white fluff lining it along with the end of the sleeves.

The dress also tied in the middle, which easily displayed my cleavage with how tight I tied the coat together. To add depth to my costume, I made sure to wear sparkling white stockings and white heels—while also keeping my dark wavy hair down and wearing the same Santa hat as Karter's.
