Evander's P.O.V
Maxim didn't ask us anything about Carlos Santiago again. I tightened the security around Maxim. I didn't want Lucas to fill his head with nonsense. I tried to find out how badly Carlos was hurt. Syl notified me later that the man was in critical condition. Complaints against Carlos were piling up. I was hoping that he would live to rot in jail. I examined Carlos's medical results, then went back to work. I wrapped up everything by one pm. Maxim was already waiting for me by the door when I went to pick him up. The little boy ran toward me and said, "Papa showed me where we could find the materials for my train station, Daddy. Let's go."
I hugged Maxim and said, "Let me freshen up first, baby boy. I'm thirsty as well. We will leave after I have had something to drink." Maxim nodded, then went to grab his jacket. My eyes fell on a picture of Chris and me as I walked out of the bathroom. It was the only one we received from Chris's mother. We looked like total strangers in the photo. I felt guilty for treating Chris like an enemy. I grabbed my phone and called my mate. I smiled when Chris said, "I was about to call you, Van. I'm glad you beat me to it."
I chuckled and asked, "Really? What did you want to talk to me about?" Chris seemed busy. He relayed something to Duncan, then replied, "I have some good news for you, Van. The Jumin Charity Organization invited us to a party. It's their annual couple's extravaganza. I heard that their parties are always out of this world. Do you want to go with me? It's this Saturday. I hope you are free that day because I want to go." I didn't want to leave Maxim alone for long. It was like Chris had read my mind. He quickly added, "Don't worry about Maxim. We will return early."
Maxim walked into my room suddenly and asked, "Are you talking to Papa, Daddy? Are you guys going to a party this weekend? That's good because I'm watching a movie with Grandma and Grandpa on Saturday. They promised to read me a bedtime story too." I was glad that Maxim could spend time online with his grandparents. My parents missed the boy like crazy too.
I handed the phone to Maxim so he could talk to Chris. Christopher greeted Maxim and said, "It looks like you will be busy this weekend, sweetheart. Make sure your laptop is fully charged and ready to go." Maxim giggled and replied, "My nanny already charged it, Papa. I can't wait to spend some time with Grandma and Grandpa. We are going shopping now. See you soon. Bye." Maxim blew kisses at Chris, then ran out of the room. I agreed to go to the party with Chris. We needed to strengthen our bond. Chris asked me before cutting off the line, "I forgot to ask you why you called me, Van. Was it about something important?" I shook my head and replied, "No, darling. I just wanted to hear your voice. That's all." Chris smiled and uttered, "I love you, Van," before turning off his phone.
I asked the driver to take us to the toy shop where we could find the materials we needed. My bodyguards closely followed us. The shop was more like a warehouse. You could even buy baby clothes there. The shop's owner recognized me instantly. He asked one of his employees to assist us. Maxim was a picky child. He checked all the materials for scratches and dents. It was seven o'clock by the time we had found all the pieces. I was about to pay when Maxim yelled, "Hi, Grandma Petra!" I turned to face Maxim. The boy giggled and started running toward Christopher's mother. I quickly grabbed Maxim's hand and uttered, "No, running in the shop." Maxim instantly composed himself. He looked at Petra, then at me. I sighed and stated, "You have such good eyes, Maxim. You recognized your evil Grandmother immediately. I forgot what she even looked like."
Maxim squealed and declared, "Papa said I had good eyes too." Petra greeted Maxim and asked, "How are you guys doing tonight? I don't see Christopher anywhere. Didn't he join you guys?" I pulled Maxim closer, then replied, "Chris is still at work. We will see him shortly." Petra smiled at Maxim and asked, "Do you like my son, Maxim?" I wondered what Petra's goal was. Maxim nodded and yelled, "Yes, Grandma! Papa is a great man and a good cook. He said that you taught him how to make delicious meals. Will I be ever allowed to taste your cooking, Grandma?" Petra stared into the distance, then replied, "I don't know, child. Things are complicated at the moment."
