Chapter 35. Sweetness

Evander's P.O.V

Chris had been busy organizing Maxim's birthday party for the past week. I took care of the kids in his stead. Maxim was too excited to sleep the night before the party. I decided to lie next to him. The little boy grinned when I said, "You are such a good boy, Maxim. You deserve all the happiness in the world." Maxim put his head on my chest and sighed. I stroked the boy's head and asked, "Would you like me to invite your biological father to the event, Maxim?" Maxim huffed and said, "No, Daddy. I saw him with the twins when I went shopping with grandma. He didn't even remember that it was my birthday. It hurt me, but I let it go."

I kissed Maxim's head and stated, "It's okay, darling. Your father and I love you unconditionally. Don't forget to come to us when someone bothers you." Maxim nodded, then closed his eyes. I called Luca after Maxim fell asleep. I winced when I heard Luca say, "What a pleasant surprise. How can I help you, Evander?" I rubbed my forehead in frustration and uttered, "You know exactly what you did to piss me off, Luca. It's my last warning to you. I told you to avoid Maxim at all costs because you can't seem to treat him right. You will end up six feet under if you approach my child again." I turned off my phone before Luca could reply to me. I had enough of his bullshit.

I composed myself, then went to check on Achilles. I smiled when I saw Chris. He was rocking Achilles to sleep. I hugged Chris from behind and kissed his cheek. I gazed at Achilles and asked, "What happened? He was asleep when I left the room." Chris put the baby in his crib and replied, "He needed a diaper change. That's all. Are you alright? You seem stressed." I dragged Chris to our room. I pushed Chris onto the bed and hugged him tightly. Chris patted my back and said, "There, there. Tell me what's wrong." I rubbed my face against my mate's chest and stated, "It's nothing. I already took care of it." Chris hummed while stroking my head. I growled when I got a whiff of Chris's scent. My husband looked at me in shock when I asked, "Are you pregnant again, sweetheart?" Chris rubbed his stomach and replied, "I don't think so."

I kissed Chris's stomach and said, "Your scent has changed, darling. The child seems to be an alpha like Achilles. It's a girl this time." Chris pushed me off him and rubbed his face. He sighed and declared, "I can sense her now. I should have expected it when I missed my rut." I grabbed my mate's hand and stated, "I know it's early, but we will manage." Chris scowled and yelled, "I know that, but it's too soon! I just returned to work. Why do I have to take another break so abruptly? Our youngest child can't even walk yet." I pulled Chris into my arms and said, "We are in this together, Chris. You don't have to stop working. Let me handle the legwork while you oversee the contracts." I kissed Chris softly and added, "It will be alright, my mate. I promise." Chris lay down and closed his eyes. I decided not to bother him anymore.

Chris seemed to be in a better mood the next day. He was feeding the kids when I walked into the kitchen. I could see the event planner from where I was standing. The man was setting up the tables with his workers. I gazed at the petite omega and asked, "Are you sure he can handle forty children and their families, Chris?" Chris wiped Achilles' mouth clean and replied, "I understand your concern, Van. Who knew Maxim had so many friends? Your parents hired Willow. He is supposed to be the best in the business. So don't worry about it" I kissed Chris's head and uttered, "I understand. I'll be in my study if you need me. I have an appointment with my lawyer. I'm going to put a restraining order on Luca."

Chris glanced at me and replied, "I'll be in the garden with the kids. I hope to tire them out so they can have a nap. They need to be well rested for the party." The meeting took longer than I expected. Chris was sitting by the pond with the kids when I returned. I could see how tired my mate was. I ordered lunch and joined Chris. Maxim was busy gathering flowers for Achilles. The little alpha giggled when his brother put a flower on his head. I sat next to Chris and kissed his cheek. Chris hummed when I asked him, "Are you feeling alright?" My mate leaned his head against my shoulder and replied, "Yes. Your parents are great. They took care of everything. I didn't lift a finger." I gazed at the colorful tents and stated, "The place looks beautiful. I'll make sure to pamper my parents after the party is over."

Our lunch arrived soon. I asked my parents to eat with us. The kids started yawning after eating. Chris and I put them to bed, then went to our room. I decided to enjoy a glass of whiskey. My mate put his head on my lap and said, "I'm happy with our third child, darling. Sorry for scaring you last night. Let's visit the obstetrician tomorrow." I only realized Chris had fallen asleep when I kissed his temple. I put Chris on the bed and gazed at him. He was as gorgeous as ever. I knew Chris was struggling with his emotions. He had been a workaholic his entire life. Chris had to put us first now. I appreciated my mate's efforts. I loved Chris dearly. I would never give him a reason to complain. Chris pulled me into his arms and said, "Come, lie down. I feel lonely." That was enough for me to lose my mind. I kissed Chris passionately and uttered, "Don't tempt me, Chris. You better sleep if you don't want me to devour you."

I chuckled when Chris turned to face the wall. I fell asleep right after Chris. My mother knocked on the door and said, "It's four o'clock, guys. We will take care of the kids. Take your time to get ready." We quickly got out of bed. We took a shower together and got dressed. My parents were coddling the kids when we walked into the living room. The event planner led us to the garden. There was a beautiful photo booth there. The photographer took countless photos of the whole family. It was soon time for us to greet the guests. Maxim diligently greeted everyone. The adults enjoyed drinks and snacks while the kids played. I smiled when I saw all the smiling faces. Chris kissed my cheek and uttered, "It seems like Kayden is the only alpha friend Maxim ever made." I smirked and said, "I'm glad. Our son is an intelligent and beautiful boy. Crazy alphas should stay far away from him."

Chris chuckled and stated, "I agree with you. Maxim has the right to live his life as he wants." The kids didn't want to leave. The party lasted for more than five hours. Maxim fell asleep in my arms after everyone left. Achilles was sleeping as well. My father took Maxim out of my arms and said, "Give him to me. You must be tired." My mother stroked Maxim's back and uttered, "I can't believe he'll be starting school soon." I gazed at the stars and declared, "I hope Maxim made some genuine friends at the hospital. It's hard to navigate life if you don't have good people around you." My mother stroked Achilles' head and stated, "Don't worry. Maxim's alpha brother will scare all the bad people away."

I frowned when the event planner asked Chris, "Can I say something before I leave, sir?" Chris glared at me and uttered, "Go ahead." My mother gasped when the omega bowed his head and stated, "I have organized many parties in my life. I had never expected to meet such a happy and loved omega child in an alpha-dominated family. Thank you so much for showing us that the world can change." The petite omega wiped his tears, then walked away. I sighed and declared, "The organization should try to improve omegas' lives instead of mating people. What do we pay them for anyway?"

Chris laced his fingers through mine and said, "Well. We did meet through them. So one good thing did come out of it." I kissed my mate softly and declared, "You are right. I should thank Petra and Leonard for forcing us to marry, by the way. I have been meaning to ask you something for a while now. Would you like another wedding ring, darling? This one is hideous." Chris gazed at his wedding ring and replied, "Maybe we should buy another pair." Everyone laughed when my mother yelled, "Yes! Those ugly things were giving me nightmares."
